Bob Marley died from melanoma in Miami on May 11, 1981. The first "Third World" resident to become an international superstar, Bob Marley has now influenced two generations of musicians, as well as becoming an icon for personal and spiritual freedom. McDonald notes the chanting of Bob Marley lyrics during the pro-democracy uprising in Tunisia, for example.

The Cannes Film Festival runs May 11-22. Watch for work from Japan's enfant terrible Takashi Miike, dogme posterboy Lars von Trier, and Spain's iconic Pedro Almodovar. Jodie Foster's The Beaver (Mel Gibson's comeback attempt) and the new Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides are screening out of competition.
