Box Office Report: 2012, Paranormal Activity, and Precious

According to early estimates, Roland Emmerich's latest disaster flick, 2012, grossed $25 million on Friday. An opening weekend of $60 million or more is possible. Meanwhile, the very low budget horror movie, Paranormal Activity has crossed the $100 million mark. It was the little engine that could. Another low budget film that's doing well at the box office is Precious. It's this years top contender for the Best Picture prize at the Oscars. The movie broke box office records last weekend by grossing $1.8 million on only 18 theaters. That's $100,000 per theater. Since then it has grossed an additional million. It expanded this weekend to 174 theaters and it's estimated that it grossed $1.7 million on Friday.
