Brazilians Insulted By Robin Williams's Joke About Rio's Bid

Comedian Robin Williams might have gone too far when he joked about Rio's Olympic bid during his appearance on Late Show with David Letterman. After calling Letterman "the next Oprah," Williams said he hoped Oprah herself was not too upset about losing the 2016 Olympic bid to Rio de Janeiro, because unlike Chicago that sent Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama to back the bid, Brazil sent "50 strippers and a pound of blow."

The video clip with Williams's comments has been played on news shows in Brazil. Rio's Olympic Committee is even considering taking legal action against Williams.

Mayor Eduardo Paes says Williams is envious of Rio's achievement.

Four cities were contending to host the 2016 Olympic Games, among them Rio de Janeiro and Chicago. To the dismay of the American delegation that included the President and the First Lady of the United States, Chicago was the first city to be eliminated from the voting process. Rio de Janeiro won the bid, but immediately a lot of criticism followed, primarily in connection with the levels of crime in the city.

Williams runs the gamut from hilarious to tedious to crass. Found the sweet spot on crass for that one.

Couldn't have said it better, Hugh!

What people don´t  understand is we have nothing against jokes or freedom of speech...by the contrary...what many Brazilians thought it not appropriate was due to the fact this type of joke or comment does not help, when we are fighting  a terrible was against sexual tourism (where curiously indicate a good portion comes from the US ) and drug traffic..( where US is the largest consumer of cocaine world wide..)..that´s it...would it be funny to joke around terrorism and 9/11?

Instead of suing Robin Williams, perhaps they should spend some time cleaning up the city !

You don't even know the city, asswipe.

I don't think what Mr Williams said is funy, as far as I know he is drugs addicted and we dont play with that, we used to respect him and his job. Show us some respect mister!

Sputnic: instead of commenting about it perhaps you should spend some time organizing a parade against all the wars your country is used to make or going to this victim countries and helping the injured.

What is really amusing is that Williams must have thought it would be funny to say that. But i wonder how many "exagerations of an stereotype" towards himself he can take, before he gets very offended!

Perhaps he is angry that he got overcharged for his cocain

Yes, we are upset. Cause there´s always a line not to be crossed when we joke about something. Cause it was not a joke anyway, it was a senseless offensive remark disguised as a joke. What decadent Robin intended to do was not to make people laugh, but humiliate us. Rio has a bunch of problems, but the need to "clean the city" is not ours only. Drug dealing, prostitution and urban violence are worldwide matters of concern. Nevertheless, we do our best to welcome thousands of tourists every year, respecting them and where they come from. I got many american friends, i admire your country very much, i even think Chicago would be a very good choice to hold Olympic Games, but please, don´t underrate us, don´t try to justify what pathetic Robin did, don´t take us as stupid persons, we are not.

What a son of b*&ch!! By making this stupid joke, he offended men and women living Rio (drug dealers & prostitutes) and also offended the International Olympic Committee. After all, the committee members would have picked Rio over Chicago motivated by sex and cocaine. Poor taste joke!!   About Brazilian women - many people who have never been to Brazil think that Brazilian women are "very liberal" just because they wear tiny bikinis. For those ignorant individuals, Brazilian women are much more conservative in their relationships then American/European ladies. Brazilian men do not "score" in their first date as easy as we do around here or in Europe. Thinking otherwise is just ignorance and/or a big prejudice.   About cocaine - look Brazil does not produce cocaine. All cocaine consumed here and Europe is produced mainly in Colombia and Bolivia. Also, people in Brazil are one of the healthiest in the world, only 14% of the population smoke (compared to 27% in US) and most people have never done cocaine or any other narcotics. We Americans are actually one of the most addicts to legal and illegal drugs in the world.  More ignorance and prejudice.   About Chicago bid - well, this was not a strong candidacy anyway. The fact is that Chicago was the first eliminated out of four cities competing to be host. So, clearly Chicago did not win because of Rio, after all, if Rio hadn’t been chosen, Madrid or Tokyo would have been chosen ahead of Chicago. The truth is that those three cities have better candidacies.   About me – I was born in US, but I had the privilege of studying and living many years in Brazil. Apart from some urban violence in the big cities, this is a great country. People there are very warm and friendly. No matter what country you’re come from, you are well treated and respected. If you’re an immigrant they receive you almost as one of their one. The only reason I came back to America is because I love my country and I missed my family very much.

I´m brazilian and didnt feel offended by his joke. I understand he´s a stand up comediant and it´s quite normal to make jokes about any subjects he wants. People of my country should be offended of the bad politicians we have, the corruption, poverty, the forests being destroyed, the drugdealers that control Rio. Rio being chosen for the Olympic games is a joke. This country is a joke. Our media is a joke. They´re so stupid they can´t understand a simple joke. Grow up Brazil! Robin williams just scratched the surface.

The joke was in rather bad taste and sounded like sour grapes.

As american don't know, for cultural reasons, there's a limit for what's humor in other countries. In Brazil, talking fool things about other countries is a huge offense, because the country is our mother- it's not perfect, but we love it. But, americanas have no respect with the rest of the worls. Look Copenhagen! They prefer to kill the Earth than stop their broken Economy. Look Iraq: for cultural and economic, they've killed innocent people and just f*cked the country. GROW UP AMERICANS, YOU'RE NOT ALONE IN THE WORLD.

i lived in brasil i find the people to be very arrogant,.e o mulher mutio facil sim

1
hum.

andrew1234: ARROGANT your ass. Brazilian people are the ones who welcome everyone, from all over the world, kindly and with wide opened arms. And brazilians also hate to say bad things about other countries on tv shows. And women? Not that easy, pal. They don't give in right on the first date, just like many american girls do.
