Brit Awards 2013: Emeli Sandé, Mumford & Sons, One Direction
Last night’s Brits was, to be fair, about the very best the British music industry can do. It was a beautifully staged show in which great artists performed in extravagant style, wonderful music was beamed out to the populace, lots of talented musicians won awards and everyone went home happy (well, almost everyone: Alt-J and Plan B both probably deserved something for bringing a little edge and attitude into British music last year). If we are perfectly honest about the Brits, it was never intended to be an ultimate arbiter of what is great about British music. It is, rather, a shop window for major labels to display their wares to a mass television audience. Last night it did that job about as well as it could be done – apart from the second-rate celebrities handing out awards, anyway. I’ve really had enough of the B-list actors, sports people, TV personalities and lingerie models apparently deemed recognisable and acceptable for an ITV audience. The Brits is a music awards show, and I am quite sure we could find enough famous British musicians with the skills necessary to stagger up onstage, read from an autocue and hand out a gong....Read more
