Of the billions of searches carried out on the portal, Yahoo.com, over the last year, Mr Obama was third behind Spears and World Wrestling Entertainment.
Mr Obama was, however, the most searched-for politician during 2008.
The subjects of the most sought-after news stories were hurricanes, Caylee and Casey Anthony, and election 2008.
"Every day, people turn to the web to learn more about the world around them," said Yahoo's Web Life editor, Heather Cabot.
"Their searches reveal which news events, personalities and issues made an impact in 2008. This year people were captivated by the historic US presidential election and Olympic triumphs."

I can understand why "World Wrestling Entertainment" was popular. Because its pure entertainment week after week. But why freaking Britney Spears...
If you visit my blog, you would notice that I cover WWE PPV's with so much interest, because I love this sport

Amazing - although Britney Spears did some pretty crazy things this year, it doesn't really surprise me that she was #1. But it is a bit disappointing that the public interest in pop princess meltdowns and world wrestling smackdowns is so intense.

Pretty interesting, I've actually written a paper for school on the topic of politicians today and the web 2.0 world, I definitely see the future heading towards that direction. It's incredible how infotainment is so big in our society today. Anyways great story!

thanks guys- Britney's boobs are now crowd-powering political education- this will probably do more to raise the level of political discourse than any dumbed-down, corporate-approved boob-tube programming.
