Britney Spears releases her hotly anticipated sixth studio album, Circus, on Tuesday — which is a special day for Spears, as it also marks the singer's 27th birthday.

Britney kicked off her birthday with a live performance on ABC's "Good Morning America".

Fans lined up in Times Square, where the mini concert was held, hoping for the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Britney in person.

The performance found Britney decked out in her Circus gear: midriff-baring shirt, a ringmaster jacket and top hat, and she alternated between hot pants and a pair of body-hugging leather pants. Brit and a group of dancers, jugglers and performers dressed as circus animals performed two songs from the album: the title track and "Womanizer," which also were featured in the singer's documentary, "For the Record," which premiered on MTV Sunday night and is re-airing throughout the week.

Although some critics are heralding Circus as a welcome comeback and the "return of Britney", others have called the album "too varied for its own good".

Circus is a prime example of an album that should have been a series of EPs. The banger “If U Seek Amy” is rightly lumped with “Unusual You,” but the two standouts are surrounded by ballads and other tracks varying the album’s pace beyond the restraints of tolerance. Simply considering the volume of material produced for the album, four or five EPs could have easily released, each having at least one single, each revealing a different side to Spears. But as is the case, while being a surprisingly strong effort, Circus is too varied for its own good.

Britney Spears fans will be pleased to learn that Spears has announced tour dates for 2009. The tour will begin in New Orleans on March 3rd and conclude June 6th in London, England.
