Bronze Queen Mother Statue by Philip Jackson Unveiled in London
A three meter high bronze statue of the late Queen Mother was unveiled in London today, and three generations of Royal Family were there for the presentation.
The bronze statue fashioned by sculptor Philip Jackson shows the Queen Mother in her younger years. It was placed in The Mall near Buckingham Palace that also hosts a statue of her late husband, King George VI.
Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, both Prince Harry and William were in attendance along with British Prime Minister Brown and Culture Secretary Andy Burnham.
The Queen Mother, Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes Lyon, died in 2002 at the age of 101. Of Scottish lineage, her father was the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, she grew up in Glamis Castle, the family estate in Scotland, although she was born in London.
Prince Charles praised the statue's "exquisite workmanship" and thanked everyone who helped create it, including sculptor Philip Jackson.
"Their genius has provided us with a singularly appropriate physical memorial to, for many, an adored Queen Mother, a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt or employer," he said.
"How blessed we were to have known her and her generosity of spirit."
Sales of a £5 coin marking Queen Elizabeth's 80th birthday funded the statue, which is mounted above a bronze relief showing scenes from the Queen Mother's life.
