Bryant Gumbel Lung Cancer Revelation on Regis and Kelly

During an appearance on Live! With Regis and Kelly sportscaster Bryant Gumbel revealed he is undergoing treatment for lung cancer and that he had surgery two months ago to remove a malignant tumor from his lung. Gumbel, a cigar smoker, had been keeping the news under wraps, telling only close friends and family; he added, "I even kept it from my staff at Real Sports."

The Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel host was filling in for Regis Philbin, who underwent hip surgery, this morning when he explained the situation to viewers saying, "they opened up my chest; they took a malignant tumor, part of my lung and some other goodies, the pathology on most of the stuff came back benign but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment."

Gumbel is scheduled to see his surgeon again next week noting "I'm OK for the time being," with hopes of being able to play some golf in the near future.
