Bye, Jay. For Now.

I've been watching the Tonight show with Jay Leno as long as I've been watching Late Night with Conan O' Brien. I discovered both in 1995. One night, flipping through channels, I saw that Jim Carrey (who I was a fanatic of at the time) was on Leno. The rest is history.

Even though I'm a Conan fanboy that doesn't mean I dislike Leno. It's true that his show wasn't really that funny. It's true that his show was basically the same from day one till the end. Yet...it was fun to watch. Leno is a nice guy. He always had fun guests. And the production values were the best of all the late night talk shows. So, it was a little sad to see him end. Although he's not going anywhere.

And that's the problem with the final episode. It was very anti-climatic. Johnny Carson leaving was a big deal. He was actually leaving! Leno, on the other hand, will return in September basically doing the same show with the same people at the same studio. So, it will be as if he never left. That being said...it was fun to see Conan again. And I did enjoy the last 5 minutes with Leno showing the audiences the true legacy of his show: all the children of his staff members that were born over the past 17 years. 68 of them!

I feel it's really anti-climatic as well.

Jay Leno developed segments over the years, like "headlines", "jaywalk all-stars", "economy is so bad" (rodney dangerfield homage), "make ed asner smile", "make betty white flinch", plus randomly going to people's apartments & enact scenes from movies, & his auctioning off of Harley Davidson motorcycles...need I go on? He's funnier than ...well, Conan, at 11:30pm...in a consistent way.  He'd try out new material on Sundays at Hermosa Beach on real audiences & do other bookings in additional to the week-nightly show..& when there was a writer's strike, he kept his staff afloat w/personal donations.  I recognize Conan's collaborative/writing skills, but as a stand-up, he's so-so, not as good on monologue as  Leno.  Conan shines when he gets to his desk & does his segments.

Conan's set is be-u-tiful...really nice change. Tons better than that eye-crossing blue-block set design in NYC..used to give me a headache looking at it.  Leno could've used this new set...The propmakers who built Conan's set really outdid themselves.
