Calgary happy hour gets shorter - AFTER Stampede by ppeggy

Another gigantic parade wove its way through Calgary today opening another 10 days of Calgary Stampede featuring bucking broncs, tourists from everywhere, street dancing and cheap drinks in never-ending happy hours. I'm sure there were many sighs of relief from bar owners that Stelmach's curtailing of happy hours won't affect this years Stampede celebrations.  The new regulations, setting minimum prices for drinks and legislating the close of happy hours at 8 p.m., don't start until August 1.  We'll see what happens next year.

It's last call for cheap alcohol in Alberta.

The Stelmach government announced Thursday it will introduce minimum drink prices, curb happy hour and rein in last call across the province effective Aug. 1, in an attempt to corral booze-fuelled violence in pubs and bars.

The looming crackdown means the Calgary Stampede -- which officially busts out of the chutes today -- is one of the last chances Albertans will have to get their giddy-up on with cheap liquor.
