I warned America's top general in 2003 that the invasion of Iraq would be another Somalia that the U.S. would never be able to get out of, not that he had any power to change the decision to invade. Americans had only one option to prevent the quagmire they fell into: persuade Turkey to commit ground troops from its vast army in return for recognizing its claims to Mosul and Kerkuk, but that conflicted with another agenda.

Let's summarize the real reason Iraq was invaded for the uninitiated, and for those who bought the Cinderella stories of freedom and democracy: oil, weapons, and big contracts. Destroy to rebuild. In that respect the Iraq war has been a smashing success, having made billions of dollars of unprecedented profits for its corporate sponsors, not to mention the satellite states in the Gulf. Price of oil has been pushed and manipulated to levels that would now make it profitable for oil companies to drill in the Arctic. It's also the biggest factor in the coming U.S. and world recession or depression, but recession is just another opportunity for acquisition and consolidation for Big Business.

Can Obama bring the troops back home any time soon? No, not unless he's willing to create a bigger mess than before, and he's too intelligent and conscientious to do that. Saddam was a stabilizing influence. That's why Papa Bush wanted to keep him in power, and he was right. The moment U.S. troops pull out of Iraq, there will be religious and ethnic warfare on a much larger scale and wholesale bloodshed. The country will disintegrate into its ethno-religious components and threaten the stability of the entire region.

There's also an economic aspect, the rhinoceros head that no politician will talk about. Having sunk the American people into trillions of public debt for the war, the U.S. somehow must get a return on its investment, or at least find a way to recoup its losses to avoid bankruptcy. Maybe the bankers will bail out the government the next time around...

candidusmaximus, I like this story. It's good stuff.

That photo you show of  about 20 flag-draped caskets is seven caskets too many for all of Iraq this last month of October 2008. Their were ZERO casulties of war in the capitol city of Baghdad ... that is ZERO at a time of war!

Obama was against the war in a speech back in 2002 when he was a senator to the state government of Illinois - He had NO SKIN in the game and He was wrong. Barack Obama voted against the "Surge" tactic when He became the junior Senator for the state of Illinois and He was wrong when He finally had skin in the game.

Barack Ohama is at least consistant on one thing - He is WRONG when it comes to policies that go to protecting the United States interests and the change in tactics during a time of war.
