Can Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Gross $300 Million in US?
Tim Burton's 3D epic, Alice in Wonderland ruled the box office for the third straight weekend. It grossed $34.5 million and increased its total to $265.8 million.
It's now Burton's highest grossing movie to date, although the $251.1 million gross by Batman in 1989 is $479 million in today's ticket prices. So, the question now is can Alice in Wonderland reach the $300 million mark? It's only $34.2 million away.
Normally it would, but two films stand in the way: How to Train Your Dragon, which opens this upcoming weekend, and the remake of Clash of the Titans, which is released on April 2. Both open in 3D and IMAX and will take away a lot of Alice's screenings in those formats.
So, it will come down to weekday grosses for Alice. During its first weekday run it grossed $30.3 million. In its second, it grossed $21.6 million. A little over $10 million could be possible if it holds up well against How to Train Your Dragon.
Made for $200 million, Alice in Wonderland stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway. Its worldwide gross is $565.8 million. The DVD and Blu-Ray release is expected to be this summer.
