Certainly a story which would not even make any newspaper if these three Muslim women tried to voice an opinon or question an Imam in the Middle East,  they most assuredly would disappear from the face of the earth.   Of course if these three women were your run of the mill non Muslim Canadians, rest assured some Grandstanding Politicians would charge these women with racism and hate crimes, followed by a similar media outcry from Islamic groups protesting, complete with grief counsellors enmasse to local mosques and lawyers would be whipping out their calculators to see how much money would be made defending both.    Trust me, it happens.

Hence why Canada and Western Countries have become a safe haven for free speech and human rights for anyoneeven Islamics who feel their rights as a human being are being trampled upon. As I stated before, any religion that oppresses others has no place in any society.

A Footnote:

Recently British Columbia passed a law called a Taxi Passengers Bill of Rights, whereby passengers cannot be refused service.  Muslim Taxi drivers protested as they previously refused to pick up the disabled with guide dogs as Dogs are deemed unclean and against their Islamic religion.  Funny thing is, I have read the Koran and their Prophet Mohammed stated, Dogs are not unclean, Hunting Dogs  were routinely handled and loved by Muslims and used in hunting by Muslims in the Dark ages.  Mohamed states,  game brought down by Dogs is considered clean, if the dog has first not devoured any of the  Games flesh.  So this charge by Taxi Driving Muslims does not wash with me period.  Perhaps, like I, a Roman Catholic,  the Taxi Drivers should read their friggin Koran, of course their could be a caveat somewhere in the Koran by the Prophet Mohammed who may have stated, the exception to the "Dog Rule" is for Muslim Taxi Drivers and Guide Dogs, but so far I have not found it anywhere in the Koran.  So as far as I am concerned if your job description states "You cannot refuse anyone service" you have to provide that service regardless of the passengers requirements.  That include Guide Dogs.

My Final thought
Isn't it nice that one's Religious and Cultural convienience can freely discriminate based on religious or cultural differences, for Islam, it is perfectly to okay for a religous discrimination to overide the rights of anothers disability discrimination. Especially when These Taxi drivers knew full well when they took the job that the possibly of taking on disabled passengers was a given. They should just thank their Lucky Stars we do not have "Guide Hogs" for the disabled, as it has been proven Pigs are smarter than dogs.

Here's a Shock for Imam's, either assimilate, associate, live with our laws, or take the next plane out of Dodge, no one is forcing you to stay in Canada, and you are free to leave, no questions asked. You obviously found Canada to your liking verus your own war torn country. So, adhere to our Canadian laws, culture and identity or leave, if you do not agree with me, don't let Canada's door hit your ass on the way out.

Below is a link to Muslim Leader charging Rights abuse this Taxi Law is against their Human Rights in servicing the disabled with guide dogs. No bias here, just the facts.

Calgary Muslim women file human rights complaint against imam

Published: Saturday, February 02, 2008

CALGARY - Three Calgary Muslim women have filed a human rights complaint against a local imam, alleging they were treated unfairly at a recent meeting.

Qasira Shaheen, Robina Butt and Shugufta Iftikhar say they were discriminated against by Syed Soharwardy at an open house in November at the Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Centre.

"We were discriminated against as women and were treated poorly, differently, negatively and adversely," they wrote in the complaint, filed in December with the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

They claim they weren't allowed to ask questions, were physically and verbally threatened, were made to sit in the back of the hall and were eventually forced to leave.

Shaheen said the women attended the meeting to ask questions about donations made to the mosque.

She said the women decided to launch the complaint because they feel they were treated unfairly and "differently from men" at the meeting.

"It's just to get justice," she said.

The incident at the centre was videotaped and a DVD was included with the human rights complaint.

Soharwardy was unavailable for comment on Saturday.

However, he is quoted in the Washington Times, a daily newspaper in Washington D.C., as denying any abuses and saying he supports women's rights in Canada's Islamic community.

He alleged the women's husbands - his "enemies in the mosque" - put them up to the complaint.

Iftikhar's husband, Iftikhar Ahmed, who was at the meeting, said the complaint was necessary to protect women's rights in the local Muslim community. He said he supports the women's actions.

"There's not any difference for women," he said. "I just want (Soharwardy) in the general public to apologize to the women."

As well, Butt's husband, Najeeb Butt, added he has no personal fight against Soharwardy.

"These women had serious questions about the mosque committee and possible misuse of funds. And they were not permitted to participate as equal members of the Muslim community."

Soharwardy, national president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, launched his own human rights complaint in December.

He said comments on a blog on the website of the defunct Western Standard magazine promote hatred against Muslims. Soharwardy's complaint is with the Alberta Human Rights Commission.

The magazine's former publisher, Ezra Levant, appeared before the commission in January. The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada launched a human rights complaint after the former magazine's 2006 publication of a series of Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The cartoons, originally published in a Danish newspaper in September 2005 and further reprinted in more than fifty other countries, led to massive protests across the Muslim world, some of which escalated into violence resulting in more than 100 deaths.

good stuff:

Hello Barry,

You've written a terrific article that is very relevant not only to Canadians, but to the world at large, especially since Muslims seem to be in just about every country.

Wars begin in the Muslim world, usually for two reasons: appropriation of territory, or religious ground.  I wouldn't believe for a second that this news hasn't reached the more extreme Muslims around the world, especially Iraq and Iran.

While this news in itself is not enough for them to start a war against Canada, they'll probably just lump Canada in with "The Great Satan," in the future.

Keep tuned to Canada.

Barry I really enjoyed your article!  It was well written; employed your own thoughts and views on the topic and I found your writing style humorous in some parts, (I hope it was meant to be!) and found myself chuckling sometimes with your humorous writing style.

I found it to be an extremely balanced way of writing an op-ed and very professional.  Thank you for your contribution.

I believe that this is the kind of cartoon the Muslims were complaining about in the article.

So what is your point, lots of words against islam, but are you claiming islam is bad because it does not allow women the right to complain?

How different is that from fundamentalist christians?

And i just knew you would come around to poor liiltle ezra....

I think you continue to parrot neocon talking points, you are just spreading seeds of hate.

Reminds me of seeing commies behind every rock...

We need to encourage voices of moderation  among muslims, your continuous muslim bashing does not help because it just turns more moderate, reasonable muslims into the arms of the extremists, and it gives them more reasons to show the west hates them.

But then maybe that's what you want, a crusade to engulf the world in flames.

I see you on a war of ideas to turn canda into another neocon colony, but look at how the bushies are doing, you think canadians will buy into that?

How does it feel to be a parrot for war criminals who are despised everywhere?

  • So what is your point, lots of words against islam, but are you claiming islam is bad because it does not allow women the right to complain?
He claimed nothing of the sort.

  • I think you continue to parrot neocon talking points, you are just spreading seeds of hate.

And what are your views? To allow immigrants to our country bring their culture and religious laws, and make us bend our laws to suit them? Bringing their culture is one thing, and it is totally fine, but not bringing their religious laws and expecting us to follow them.

Sorry, but if you want to work as a Taxi Driver in Canada, then I don't care what kind of religion you're part of--you could be a memeber of scientology for all I care--but you're going to have to follow our laws, and that means giving disabled individuals with guide dogs service when requested!

  • I see you on a war of ideas to turn canda into another neocon colony, but look at how the bushies are doing, you think canadians will buy into that?
I can only hope that the Canadian public are smarter when it comes to this than our brothers and sisters to the south.

  • How does it feel to be a parrot for war criminals who are despised everywhere?
I'm sure the opposite is also true. There are no right or wrong--only a matter of perspectives. Those you consider to be war criminals probably see you as a war criminal.

Thanks you PYG, I could not have said it better myself.

My position is this, you cannot convienently pick and choose what your religion allows and doesnt allow, especially taking a job as a cabbie to serve the Public and then insisting that the Disabled should shelve their rights because they have a guide dog.   The Koran clearly states, Dogs are acceptable within reason. It also states women have rights, though apparently to Imams they do not. Like I have always said it is not against Muslims per say but radicals who take Islam to the Nth degree to satisfy their ends,  One tidbit Vixpiz should know the Islamic extremeists in 911 were seen on video frequenting strip bars, drinking alcohol and other trangressions against Islam. Certainly smacks of hypocrisy, but then Vizpix incontinent cat Layton most likely tried to explain it to Vizpix, but methinks Vizpix was too busy munching on Laytons kitty litter treats to hear what Layton was telling him. Any Religion that is an affront to humans has no place in any society, especially Canada.

good stuff:

The funny thing is, why do they persist on being Taxi Drivers when, by Law, it is required to give service to a disabled individual with a guide dog if, allegedly, their religion explicitely states that Dogs are "Unclean"?

Is changing a career path really that hard? I've never been a Taxi Driver before, so do fill me in: Is there something glorifying about being one?

I don't know about them, but if I believed in a religion that was somehow against dogs, I wouldn't get into a line of work where contact with dogs are almost inevitable (well, as inevitable as guide dogs guiding the blind can get).

Barry Artiste

I dunno PYG, Taxi driving is a starting point for many immigrants looking for work.

Their Koran does not forbid contact with Dogs, so there refusal to assist Guide dogs does not wash with me.

As for their Job description hey I am sure they read it, just not our Canadian Human Rights Charter when they hit our shores, of course now they have read it, and are trying to make a federal case out of it, trying to overule their religion over humanity.
