Roman Polanski became well-known in the United States over thirty years ago with the film "Tess" that featured a beautiful, young teenager as the heroine named Nastassja Kinski. The cinematography for that film was outstanding. It won several awards and despite Polanski's scandals he was respected in the film community. This year Polanski was held and placed under house arrest in Geneva, Switzerland for a crime that happened in the late 70's. He is accused of having sex with a 13 year-old girl back in 1978. Polanski was labeled a pedophile his whole career however, those individuals in the industry working for the Cannes Film Festival who have not been arrested for the same crimes have come to his aide to champion his cause and support his actions by signing a petition on his behalf. Is anyone surprised that the Stars of 2010 and behind the scenes workers are in support of Roman Polanski? He is awaiting extradition to the states to face sentencing for his crimes that say he has been having sex with minors. Right now he is in Geneva, Switzerland under house arrest trying to keep from returning back to the US. The current ages for consensual sex of minors is as young as 15 in some states and the majority of US states require that although kids are given the opportunity legally to have sexual intercourse with each other, they must date kids that are not more than 4 years their elder. The only surprising factor in the consensual sex game of minors is that buying condoms in many states require that you be 18 years old. Perhaps, we are sending children mixed signals? When a teenager becomes pregnant maybe, the state the child lives in should pick up the tab if they do not allow the purchase of condoms in that state.
Top directors with films at the Cannes Film Festival have signed a petition in support of director Roman Polanski, who is under house arrest in Switzerland. Signatories of the petition include French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard, French actor-director Mathieu Amalric and Cannes best director laureate Bertrand Tavernier. The petition is posted on a Web site overseen by French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy. Polanski is under house arrest in Geneva in a 33-year-old sex case. He pleaded guilty in 1978 to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. But after a judge said he would renege on the plea bargain, Polanski fled to his native France. He has been a fugitive since then.
