The Careful Casting of "Magic Mike"
The cast of "Magic Mike" is very interesting. First, it should be noted that the movie is directed by Steven Soderbergh, a renowned cinematographer, screenwriter, editor and film director. Those who have watched the films "Erin Brockovich" and "Out of Sight" will agree that Soderbergh is good at what he does. "Magic Mike" stars Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Cody Horn, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello, Olivia Munn and Matt Bomer.
In brief, the movie depicts a seasoned male stripper Mike (Channing Tatum) trying to show a younger performer, Adam (Alex Pettyfer), the ropes. Mike teaches Adam the intrigues of making easy money, partying and picking up hot women in the process.
The selection of this movie's cast was, without doubt, done very carefully. How else could they end up with some of the hottest guys in Hollywood? The idea of putting Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matthew McConaughey and Alex Rodriguez in a single movie itself was magnanimous. Add this to the fact that there is a scene in which all of them appear shirtless, and the craziness most fans have for the movie becomes obvious.
Matt Bomer has been quoted as saying that when he was first contacted for the role, he thought they had mistaken him for Ian Somerhalder. While some people might still be hung up on the idea that Ian Somerhalder (remember "The Vampire Diaries") might have been great for an exotic dancer role in "Magic Mike," no one can deny that Bomer fits in nicely and gave all he could for the movie.
Many people have been airing their views on the cast of this fabulous movie. Even the cast members have not been left out. For example, Joe Manganiello has asserted that he and the other cast members got along very well. He says that although some people may believe otherwise, it is his personal belief that "Magic Mike" would have been very boring without Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey.
It is very clear that the stars in this movie were selected very carefully. Apart from their respective acting skills, the cast members had another common characteristic in that all of them can be considered to be some of the sexiest in their corners of the universe. They have a great sense of humor too, so the movie is not all about looking great on screen.
However, "Magic Mike" is not all about great casting; the storyline is good too. Mike is depicted as a multi-talented entrepreneur who is also very charming. During the day, he dabbles as a roof technician, car detailer and even furniture designer. He does all these from his beautiful condo in Tampa Beach. At night, he is completely transformed. He goes to Club Xquisite where he is a strip dancer with original and very sexy dance moves, something that has made the ladies croon over him for many years. He brings the ladies, and by extension the money, to the club, and the club owner Dallas (McConaughey) loves him for this.
Mike sees raw talent in Adam, who he refers to as the Kid, and he decides to groom him in dancing and all the associated fun and benefits that comes with it. The Kid takes to it like duck to water, and by the time summer comes, he has gathered enough fans of his own.
Things do not stay this rosy for long. When Mike meets Adam's sister Brooke (Cody Horn), he is smitten and decides to pursue her. Just as it seems as if he is succeeding, his lifestyle becomes an obstacle to their fledging relationship. It is interesting to note that the movie is loosely based on the life of Channing Tatum before he got famous.
The stars of "Magic Mike" had to learn a lot about their roles before production was started. They were fully immersed in the world of thongs, waxing, grooming, undergarments and all the things that make the daily life and work of strippers possible. They even had to perform nearly nude for dozens of female extras. This is what must have prepared them for the exaggerated hyper-masculine roles they had to play. In fact, the move has several scenes of silly, sexy and nearly nude scenes of dancing that the actors must have prepared for thoroughly before shooting. The cast of "Magic Mike" must have learned many things from making this movie, and they succeeded in entertaining many people too.
