We arrived at Raphael's rooms, a sequence of rooms decorated in the early 16th century by the great artist of the Renaissance. This is the ceiling of the Room of Constantine, which was finished, in fact, by his students. The walls depict the first Christian emperor's victories in battle in the 4th century. The ceiling, entitled "Triumph of Christian religion", is a strikingly plain allegory, with the cross literally toppling the pagan idol. In person, the perspective used in the fresco makes the broken statue especially pathetic.
