Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) is the most important holiday for Chinese families, which is the first day of lunar calendar calculated on the time the moon takes to go around the Earth, in 2010, it’s Feb.14  (the same day as Valentine's day), but every year, this date is changing.

Since ancient time, people started to observe the Moon and created many beautiful legends about moon, the most famous is Chang’e legend. Chang’e was the wife of Hou Yi-a famous archer and hero. Once upon a time, there were 9 Suns living in the sky, one of which came out to work for one day in order to radiate the light and heat for the Earth. But one day, all of them came out together and led to a drought disaster. Hou Yi shot down 8 Suns and saved all the species. As his reward, God gave Hou Yi the Elixir of Immortality, but Chang’e finally took the whole Elixir by herself. Her body got ever light and finally flied to the Moon. Now, in cloudless night, people can observe that beautiful Chang’e is sitting in the Moon.

Another legend is the Chinese Zodiac is named for the 12 animals that responded to Buddha’s summons in this order: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, 2009 is the Year of Ox and 2010 will be the Year of Tiger.

Chinese New Year is celebrated with big family gatherings, gift giving, the eating of symbolic foods--all focused on bringing good luck for the New Year and celebrating the coming of Spring, it is really a festival quiet with the hope of good fortune.
