Chaka Demus & Pliers Arrive in Nigeria For Jay Jay Okocha
Reggae singers, John Taylor (a.k.a CHAKA DEMUS) & Everton Bonner (a.k.a PLIERS) have confirmed their arrival in Nigeria on 24th June, 2008 to entertain football enthusiasts at the Jay Jay Okocha testimonial match which will hold two days later at the Ultra Modern Warri City Stadium.
Mr. Pinnick who is the arrow head of the Jay Jay Okocha testimonial match which will feature some of the African best footballers of fame spoke from the famous Wynn Hotel, Las Vegas, USA, venue of the contract signing ceremony in the presence of their agent, Donald Harper of Jamstar Productions in the United States.
According to the terms of the contract, John Taylor (a.k.a CHAKA DEMUS) & Everton Bonner (a.k.a PLIERS) who will fly into Nigeria enroute Kingston are expected to thrill the football audience during half time and to further entertain guests and VIP's at the state banquet which will hold later in the evening after the match.
As a build-up in sensitization, the musicians would visit the studios of the Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri for a live interview programme on the eve of the high profile testimonial match.
According to Mr. Pinnick, the musicians are enthusiastic about the Jay Jay Okocha testimonial match. "We are eager to fly into Warri, Nigeria to do the show because the Austin Jay Jay Okocha is a footballer we admire so much. He is so much loved in Jamaica and beyond", the musicians were quoted as saying during a live telephone interview from Jamaica.
Not even Bob Marley can match the success of Chakademus and Pliers on the British Charts. The duo notched up a record five (5) consecutive Top 20 entries,
including "Twist and Shout", their number one hit with Jack Radics, and "Murder She Wrote". The duo became household names as a result; the combination of Pliers' yearning vocals and Chakademus' rock stonechat proves irresistible to their Global audience, and earned them a Gold disc for their album "Tease Me".
Their first collaboration, "Gal Wine", was recorded for producer Ossie Hibbert and spent over three months on the reggae charts. It was the success of this song, which led them in the direction of Sly and Robbie, who originally built the mesmerizing "Murder She Wrote"" for guitarist Lloyd "Gitsy" Willis whose nimble handiwork, could be heard on most subsequent Chakademus and Pliers releases.
Issued on Sly and Robbie's own Taxi label, together with a solo song by Pliers called "Bam Bam", "Murder She Wrote" became one of the biggest selling reggae dancehall singles.
