The chastity belt was used in the middle ages as a way to guaranty the chastity of women, or so it was believed.  However after reassessing the evidence, historian Albrecht Classen believes this was not the case and suggests the medieval chastity belt was made of cloth and symbolic of a couples love and commitment to each other.  The chastity belt we know today, complete with locks and chains, was a 19th century invention, bought by women wanting to fend off sexual harassment in the work place.
