Christian Bale's 'Terminator' Meltdown Freakout at Shane Hurlbut

Christian Bale, he of cloaked, caped Dark Knight fame and soon to be Terminator: Salvation infamy has been recorded in the midst of a three-minute, on-set meltdown — a total tirade and full-on freak-out targeted in all of its venomous, vitriolic glory at the film's unassuming Director of Photography -- one Shane Hurlbut.

And what prompted the unleashing of this American Pyscho-esque raging wrath?

Hurlbut allegedly stepped into the frame during one of Bale's ever-precious scenes, apparently ruining an otherwise perfect performance.

This simply has to be heard to be believed (NSFW, in that it contains a nearly constant stream of swearing): Christian Bale's Apocalyptic 'Terminator Salvation' Meltdown

But leave it to the interwebs to strike quickly with an amazing assortment of quickly-produced remixes  — this one courtesy of @monkeysplat and the good folks at RadarLA.

Christian Bale lost it on the set of Terminator Salvation and we had some extra time on our hands. So here you go. The Bale Fail Salvation Mix as edited by @monkeysplat

Despite the fact that this insanity now begs for someone to post an audio/video mashup of the beats, freakout, and a slew of mad samples from previous Bale films. What's that, you say? It's already been done?

Indeed it has. Check out both the Bale Out - RevoLucian's Christian Bale Remix and The Mae-Shi's awesome "R U Professional" - CHRISTIAN BALE Tribute

But it doesn't end there, YouTuber jeffreycoy has made an incredible video mashup that incorporates audio from Bale's insane rantings into an incredible, reworked version of the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy "He's Just Not That Into You".

Nevertheless, this "Balefail" also begs two inevitable questions:

1) Could this be an elaborate hoax of MC Joaquin Phoenix rap proportions?

2) And, if so, who did it better: Christian 'the angry actor guy who verbally abused his Mom' Bale, or the faux primadonna fury of Michael Cera?

Oh and perhaps calls for a Bale-out.

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

My word! I always thought that Bale was one of our more level-headed Hollywoodites but it appears not. Has someone's ego got too big for its boots?

OH MY! I couldn't get the page to load at first but it just did and I listened to the audio. WHAT THE HELL?! What a little p***k! I had so much time for Bale (although that reduced muchly when I heard of his violence towards his family) but that's gone now. Wow.

No! It has to be a hoax! (Sorry for the repeat messages - I can't get all my thoughts together at once this time in the morning.)

This couldn't possibly be real. Right? Please say so!

Makes me want to see the movie even more now. Something about a huge blowup like this on set makes the movie more appealing. Clearly Christian is passionate about this role so I hope his performance is half as entertaining as that 4 minute or so clip.

I know what his favorite word is.

Man, I don't blame Christian Bale at all... what kind of dumbass walks around the set after they say action.  There's nothing you can do about the lights after they say action so no sense in worrying about it like some amateur.  I would have fired him on the spot.  Especially when he does it twice.  Fired...

Yeah, exactly. It happened twice. When you work a set, if the camera's rolling and what you're doing has nothing to do with the current take, you stop all work. Even if you think what you're doing in the background, OFF-camera, doesn't matter, any sounds you make could be distracting. That's unprofessional. People that quickly dismiss Bale because he had an emotional outburst do not understand acting; if this scene had been one that did not require any amount of emotional preparation or concentration, I'm absolutely certain Bale would not have exploded like that. In his entire career, playing such intense characters as Patrick Bateman and Bruce Wayne, he has never exploded except on-screen. When someone works unprofessionally with a REAL pro, then this is likely to happen. It's serious business, and acting takes alot - a LOT - of concentration and energy. To waltz around on-set during a take without any consideration for the actors - whom are working to tell the story just as much as anyone else - is a prime example of unprofessionalism. People have to stop jumping to conclusions about Bale and consider that they themselves would most likely erupt like that if they were so fiercely focused on a task, and someone else on your team jerks around.

And I agree, this makes me want to see the movie more, if he's getting this intense.

I have to say...not meaning to condone rudeness nor poke at professional integrity, however...

In shooting a scene, it's broken down as such:

1)  The do a blocking / walkthrough of the scene with the entire crew.  The director has a opportunity to say what he/she would like the scene to look like, and the Director of Photography (D.O.P) is there to ensure that it will be possible to be captured.  The actor also gets a chance to learn what they're doing.

2)  The actor is then asked to leave the set, so that the technical aspect of the scene can be figured out:  the lighting, the camera angles, all repeatedly rehearsed with a stand-in until all choreography of the camera, special effects, and where the lighting needs to happen is done.  The D.O.P has that moment to figure out and solidify everything.  The actor is off getting changed, getting into hair and makeup, learn lines and getting into character, while all things techinical is being hammered out.  This process can be anywhere from an hour to 2 hours (sometimes longer), and it is not rushed.

3)  When the actor is called back to set, it's the general consensus that the set and crew are READY TO SHOOT.  Nothing more to figure out, there shouldn't be any other lighting, camera issues, since that part is understood to be DONE.

An action film, no doubt ripping with crane shots and long takes, may have several factors for needing to be reshot>   One that is understandably unforgivable (especially when he's likely shooting intense action scenes in an 18-hour-day) is when the someone wanders in to do something that should have already been done.

It would be equivalent to recording a cooking show, when the host expects everything to be ready so that they can cook, and then while shooting someone walks into shot and says "I just wanna make sure I chopped all the garlic up."

Again, Mr. Bale certainly has anger issues, but Mr. Hurlbut really had no reason to be there.

I gotta say, it sounds like a man who's snapped because the DP is an unprofessional dickwad. After reading the article on Aintitcool.com, my feelings seem to be backed up.  its very easy to trash the rich movie star because he's acting out but in this instance it sounds like a man who has a reason to be pissed.

It has nothing to do with ego. The DP was told repeatedly to not come in the way and he didn't listen so he got what he deserved. I would be pissed too lol.

Publicly yelling at anyone onset (particularly above-the-line folks) is extremely bad form.

One can only pray that the DOP will one day get the chance to smack the crap out that half arsed actor’s mouth like he deserves!!!!

Jesus, no wonder nobody respects anything the filthy turd does when he can’t even have the decency to speak to an on set colleague with a bit of respect.

I do not see movies because actors are nice people. I don't see movies because directors give to charities. I do not see movies because directors of photography do not screw up on the job.

I see movies becasuse they are entertaining.

All of you people judging Bale on this might want to look at the big fucking logs in your own eyes before pointing out the stick in Bale's.

It was an inexcusable outburst, but came during an incredibly emotional scene...I can imagine how a DP screwing with the lights and ruining a scene--not for the first time--would anger Bale. And I can see how emotions could carry him away into that absurd tirade.

And I can see him regretting it later.

what I can't really take are all these apparently perfect people out there who've never thrown a temper tantrum.

Bales OUTBURST like that, in that tone, in my opinion, was uncalled for..I know abit bout onset protocol, and actors are NOT excluded from unruly behavioral rules..Okay yes the DOP should not have been there in frame at the time, so correct there of what some say above there, but Bales outburst like that in that particular tone, uncalled for, is all am saying..

Gregg.
