In what could be a parody but I suspect is not, a Christian Hip Hop crew promote the virtues of a new trend in the committed Christian world - the Christian Side Hug - No Full Frontal Hugging Allowed.

The Lyrics include "Gimme that Christian Side Hug, Gimme That Christian Side Hug, I'm a Rough Rider filled with Christ Love, Gimme that Christian Hug..." And "...When I hug people I leave room for the Holy Spirit."

I found an explanation for the Christian Side Hug on the site Stuff Christians Like. It is maintained by an young urban Christian male Jonathan Acuff, and he offers the following explanation for the Christian Side Hug.

Acuff says "Yes, God wants us to be compassionate and kind and tender with each other. Not only that, but he wants us to love our enemies and serve our neighbors. As long as there is no body on body action. I’m talking of course about a “full frontal hug,” one of those sinful abominations where you just wrap your arms around a friend and embrace them. That’s why Christians the world over have pioneered the “side hug.” In the side hug there’s no risk of two crotches touching. Instead of face to face, you go side to side, putting your arm around the person and your hip against their’s."

Acuff is releasing a book in 2010 that is being billed as a "metrosexual" take on Christianity. I leave it to others to decide the virtue of the Christian Side Hug vs the more common "Full Frontal Hug."

Enjoyed this, and on a factual basis.  I find articles re the spirit, our inner growth, however one wants to phrase it, very interesting. I would appreciate seeing more of them, as one gets so little of this in the media, yet it is a part of what drives our lives.

Are you kidding me? Sir, or Madam or whoever the hell you might be, this is exactly what teh hell that is wrong with modern monothiestic religions and if this is part of the things that drive your life i am sorry for you, and your family and your soul. Christianity is an abominaion that has become so perverted and different than the intentions of the Jesus Christ. Jesus would commit suicide if he saw this video, he would slit his wrists as he heard the lyric "Jesus Never Hugged No-Boyd Like That."

This offensive and demeaning to the religion of Christianity. Mocking the essence of staying away from temptation to the extreme. Although I agree with what their message says to a point. Which to avoid confusion is that some evangelicals take forms affection to be sinful (ie hugging [a real full frontal hug]); I do not agree making a dance and sing-song about how they can be lame and overbearing with hugs and signs of PDA is "cool" or (if they are such Christians) WWJD (What Would Jesus Do).However monotheistic religions, for the most part Christianity and Catholicism, have become extremely tainted and disrespected within the past couple of centuries. Mostly from criticism and those who have been found or accused of a form of crime within the ministries. Not only that but from betrayal or untrustworthy affairs as well.religion has always been a touched and debated topic.

Typical Christians, demonising everything innocent. What's next? HOLDING HANDS?
I see it all now:
Hey kids! Do you love JAYSUS? Do you love HOLDIN HANDS? Because you know, you might have touched your own butt or boob with your hand, and your friend might of touched THEIR own butt or genitals. And that is the ONLY thing anyone ever thinks about while holding hands, it's the only reason we do it, to rub butthands. As we ALL know, people only hug so they can rub crotches and get sexual kicks out of it. It's practically pre marital casual sex! YOU'RE ALL SINNERS

Dude the thought of crotch rubbing while hugging never even crossed my mind before. Thanks Christians, I'll keep that one with me forever. SEE WHAT YOU DID. Now hugs will be all the more better.

How ridiculous is it that there's drive-by shooting and cop sirens in the background but they're saying full-frontal hugs aren't okay?

This is taking stupidity to another level, religious or not.

eh, I think this is kinda ridiculous too - but for the record, Jon Acuff is not really promoting the side hug - many of his posts are satirical or mocking.  Yes, Christians can have a sense of humor too.  Stuff Christians Like is funny if you live in the world he gently mocks, as I do.

Thanks Rita, I suspected as much regarding Mr. Acuff as for the video though...that is likely honestly earnest, no?

Sudha- it's a parody.  People can parody themselves and their own culture... think Saturday Night Live.  It doesn't mean they don't fundamentally believe in the side hug.  Just that they realize it's a funny concept.

I... I *think* it's a parody.    Poe's Law rears its inevitable head.On the off-chance that it's not, one wonders how all of these folks managed to miss the five or seven seperate occasions where Paul asks the Christians to "greet one another with a holy kiss"?Also, the whole song, gunshot samples and all, reads like a grotesque parody of hip-hop slapped together by people with no respect for the form.  Nice going, kids.  You fail religion AND music.

Thanks for clarifying for me, peace

Based on the audience laughter, I believe it's very much parody. If not, I'd prefer to live in ignorance.

you guys are seriously being ridiculous. First of all, Jesus came to the earth so you could chose to believe in Him or you could chose to swear repeatedly (saying Hell over and over and worse), mock religion and insult Him by saying He'd commit suicide, you obviously study your Bible and pray frequently to know His own personal thoughts like you so clearly state. Secondly, it is a joke... grow up. You must belong to the group of people who are trying to take away religious freedom by yelling at anyone who says Merry Christmas, or God bless you when you sneeze. I'm sick and tired of people trying to shut down God's believers by telling them what they can and can not say and do... I'm taking a stand this year... so MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL and GOD BLESS YOU! That's right, I said it! As for the Christian side hug, I like the idea of leaving room for Christ, but I like the idea better of hugging like Christ would have, loving like He would have... knowing He wouldn't see those He dearly loved for a while- and holding on to them like it may be your last time. May God bless you and keep you....

personally, i'm a Christian, and i don't find this offensive at all...i actually think this is hilarious and i took it all in good humor.  i don't think it should be taken too seriously, which it has.  it shouldn't be taken offensively...people are focusing way too much on this and getting all mad, and i think that's just stupid, no offense.  i don't agree, i'm not against frontal hugs, nor do i think those who are against them are stupid.  it's personal preference and not something to get so upset over!!  chill.

I think the idea of this song is rather amusing and i myself am not a big believer in the whole christianity and bible thing and am a very huggable person, though i do find the idea of a side hug really riduculous, you just cant really show true affections in a side hug. Sure kids aren't as innocent as they used to be and yes some people might find a full frontal hug rather uncomfortable but seriously very rarely will someone think "oo hey i'm giving this person a full frontal hug and my crotch is rubbing against theirs". I see where they are coming from though and this whole debate about this song and whether its offensive, down right stupid, very serious or not has been blown wayyy out of proportion. if people want to side hug, i don't see why they cant and if people want to full frontal hug, then i don't see why they can't so does it really matter people. If anyone had half a brain they would realise that everything anyone says, does or feels is up to them, whether they have been "forced" to do it or not, they still made the decision to do it. and definately by the laughter in the clip, it was definatly a parody and all was made in good humor. sho chillax peeps and enjoy something thats actually rather amusing to watch and talk about. everyone is differnet and everyone has their own beliefs so stop snapping at people who have made there own judgement on what they have seen, coz even though one might find it offensive and the other finds it amusing, it is still YOUR decision.

This might be the funniest song I have ever heard in my life. It is so ironic that they don't allow peaceful and kind hugs but threaten instead to put you in a coma if you "commit" a hug crime
