GOP NJ gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie has vowed if elected governor of New Jersey in November that he will work to block legalizing gay marriage in the state,  even amending New Jersey's state constitution to do so.

His opponent Jon Corzine supports the legalization of gay marriage in the state.

Lawmakers have said they expect the issue to be brought up shortly after the Nov. 3 election. Democratic Gov. Corzine has said he would sign a law making New Jersey one of a handful of states to recognize same-sex marriage.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Christie said he supported civil unions, which offer the legal benefits but not the name of marriage, for same-sex couples. Civil unions have been offered since 2007.

Should lawmakers pass a gay-marriage bill, Christie said he would support amending the state's Constitution to ban the practice. - AP

Well the Bible does state it should be Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, but hey, if that's what they want, that's between them and God. I won't judge, my pay grade isn't that high.

Boo hoo! Boo hoo!

Christie Accepts Civil  Unions and Would Ban Gay Marriage is what the headline should say.

Sorry, but I don't buy that separate but equal ain't equal enough.

SMK, you  present this news as if every vestige of civil rights for gays would be trampled under Christie.

If the people of New Jersey want to make a homosexual union the legal equivalent of a heterosexual union, so be it. But they do get to vote on it.

And, seeing that civil unions already exist and are supported by Christie, where's the beef?

I mean this is the modern remake of "Much Ado About Nothing".

Christie vows to ban same-sex marriage

Associated Press

Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie says if he wins next month, he'll do all he can to block the state from allowing gay marriage -- possibly even pushing to amend the state constitution.

"If you're going to make that type of groundbreaking societal change, people should get the chance to vote on it," he said in an interview Friday with The Associated Press.

New Jersey has been one of the central battlegrounds over the past half-dozen years as gay rights advocates have won expanded legal recognition for same-sex couples.

Since 2007, the state has offered civil unions to gay couples, which gives them the same state-granted legal benefits as married couples but stops short of calling them "married."

For people on both sides of the issue, the distinction between marriage and civil unions is enormous. Supporters of gay marriage say civil unions don't do enough to give them equal rights; opponents say allowing gays to marriage would undermine a fundamental element of society.

Both sides are ramping up campaigns to frame the issue as one that Garden State voters should consider next month.

Christie says he supports civil unions.

I remember. You are not at fault. The newspaper is. But, you didn't explain that Christie accepts civil unions.

They want to sell trouble.

I should have made that clearer.

Was only kidding when I said you were a fool,  but I never made a headline that said "Meanie evil Christie hates gays",  only that he WILL ban gay marriage.  I do not support gay marriage because I believe in the Paglia school of thought,  that civil unions are enough for gays and for straights as well.  Democracy ought to celebrate the differences, and not make all the same. Catholic gay activist  Andrew Sullivan has caused this gay marriage to spin out of control.  I have a cousin who is gay and our family embraces him as part of the wonderful mix of life,  NOT to be tolerated,  but to be celebrated.  I take the Jungian view on marriage as do you.  I am not pro or anti any group but celebrate the mix which pluralism gave rise to.  I am voting for Christie, ( as although I work much in Midtown East,  Manhattan,  I am a train ride out in New Jersey)and so is my gay cousin.   Many gays are backing Christie here.

Thanks.

What activist groups do is set up taboos and enforce them by "othering" the flag-bearers of the opposition. This stifles free exchange of opinions because, if you speak up and out, you can't be accepted socially anymore.

That is what "galled" me about California. They have the same problem. The Mormons accept civil unions, but that is not good enough.

It is all right outta' Brooklyn. No, outta' Jung's The Undiscovered Self.

In a secular society, especially one where religions have been reduced to creeds, the power of the civil government becomes religious. So, if the government does not give you literal equality, a psychic itch appears that will only be scratched by the government giving you literal equality.

This is because  in the absence of connection to the source of the psyche within, the reason that creeds sub for religions, the embodiments without become the whole of the psyche, the same way incomplete men and women fall in love with each other.

So, if the psychic sun doesn't shine down from your emperor, then there is no psychic sunshine.

All from confusion of equality and congruence and especially a lack of  connection to the reality of psyche, Self and the Unconscious.

My theory, still under testing, is that if you keep your brains functioning well as you age, you will in fact be able to use them to their maximum.

Thanks.
