Circus Elephant Escapes through Parking Lot in Ireland (Video)
A Courtney Brothers Circus elephant named Baby escaped during a bath in Blackpool County Cork, Ireland.
Baby did not want to take a bath. The oddly named 40-year-old elephant ran away from the circus while she was supposed to be taking a bath in southern Ireland on Tuesday, causing some alarm in bystanders.
The breakout was caught on camera and footage shows the giant animal loose in the car park, where it is believed to have brushed against a car with children inside.
Workers eventually recaptured the elephant and returned her to the circus.
Animal Rights Action Network is trying to ban circus acts featuring animals. They have plans to picket Courtney Circus, where Baby performs. Their spokesman, John Carmody, explained his stance to the Irish Examiner.
"These are animals that belong in the wild but are kept in cramped vans and wagons for transportation and then made to perform ridiculous, degrading acts," he said.
Courtney Brothers spokesman Jim Conway dismissed the criticism. "Apart from common decency, it would be stupidity to abuse the animals that support our livelihoods," he said.
