Paul McCartney made his first appearance at a U.S. festival as a solo artist on April 17 at the The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.
The Beatles star dedicated songs to his former bandmates and his late wife Linda with "Foxy Lady" - "Hey Jude" - "Long and Winding Road" - "My Love Does it Good." The 2.5 hour set also included the performance of "Blackbird" which was written in response to the 60s civil rights movement. Referencing President Barack Obama, McCartney said: "Now you've got President Obama. Yeah, you know we've come a long way."

McCartney launched brightly into "Something" with only his voice and a ukulele he said was given to him by George Harrison, before his band mates and the crowd joined in.

The three day Coachella Festival also saw Morrissey, Leonard Cohen, the Hold Steady, Franz Ferdinand, and the Ting Tings take to the stage with young Hollywood stars coming out in full force to partake in the festival. Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Bosworth, Chloe Sevigny, and Zoe Kravitz were all spotted in the VIP area.

The Saturday lineup for the Coachella Festival turns more youthful with The Killers and M.I.A headlining the Saturday show and My Bloody Valentine and The Cure capping off Sunday night.

Tickets to the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival was lowered due to the recession with a three-day layaway plan costing $269 and $120 for a single-day ticket at the door.
