British pop band Coldplay's latest album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends has topped the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's global list of the best-selling album of 2008.

The top five was rounded out by classic rockers AC/DC, the ABBA-filled soundtrack to the film Mamma Mia!, pop fluff from Duffy, and the magnetic thunder of Metallica.

Unsurprisingly, many of popular music's biggest artists made the list, including Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Madonna, Britney Spears, Nickelback, and Miley Cyrus, but there were some unexpected inclusions as well.

Guns 'N Roses long awaited Chinese Democracy clocked in at #14 and Michael Jackson's re-issued classic Thriller made it all the way to #32 — on the 25th anniversary after its first release.
