Comic-Con San Diego: Not Just About Comics

Comic-Con San Diego has become the go-to event for film and gaming studios as well as comic publishers. The opening day will feature the cast and crews of two hotly-anticipated films: Tron: Legacy and Scott Pilgrim vs the World. One is set in a virtual world, the other in Toronto: both will seem alien and oddly familiar to American audiences.

Sony Pictures will also use Comic-Con 2010 to showcase Battle: Los Angeles and the Angelina Jolie vehicle Salt.

One of the July 22 morning features is The Spark of Imagination, a discussion with writers and filmmakers about the creative process. Taking part is Dr. McNinja creator Doug TenNapel, who is sharing a booth with Axe Cop co-creator Ethan Nicolle. If you see them, ask about the Axe Cop/Dr. McNinja teamup.

Also worth checking out during Day One: Comic-Con Film School, a seminar on low-budget filmmaking with equipment readily available to consumers. Oh, and keep an eye out for the Machete taco truck in the parking lot: apparently, Robert Rodriguez and the cast of Machete will be giving out free tacos.

The afternoon feature is a conversation between Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams, who sit atop the pinnacle of TV fandom. Between fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Lost, and Alias, the 6,000-seat auditorium should fill up quickly.

Preview night got the action underway, with Lions Gate promoting an upcoming film called Buried, by letting attendees get temporarily locked in a wooden coffin. This being 2010, the experience was recorded on video and shareable via social media.

“I really want to bury a Princess Leia,” an operator of the “coffin” said, referring to the penchant Comic-Con attendees have to arrive in full costume.

These are only a few of the events going on during Comic Con's first 24 hours... and Friday is Star Wars Day.
