The Coney Island Mermaid Parade takes place today, June 20th 2009, and it is sure to offer some colour and fun, as it has in years past. It starts at 2pm and has been taking place every year since 1983 and is one of the largest parades in the United States.

People dress up in all kinds of costumes, not just mermaids, and there are floats and bands, and lots of music, food and fun.

It is designed to be the offical start of summer as is held the first Saturday after the summer solstice.

According to the Mermaid Parade Web site, the parade is family friendly, kids are even in the parade. This year the parade route has changed slightly. For details, click here. The viewing stand is still in the same location.

This appeared to be a family and as many or the people/groups do, they gave their group a cute name "MerDusas" .. (Mermaids with snakes in their hair)

The first photo of the day was taken with my iPhone so I could publish it while still on the scene.

Does it get more New York than Harvey Keitel + Coney Island?
