A Conflict of HOPE for Artists: Does Obama Support the Orphan Works bill?
There has been some buzz in the blogosphere about Barack Obama’s choice of using street artist Shepard Fairey as the official Obama Campaign artist. Shepard Fairey’s image of Obama titled Hope is already considered an iconic image. But with that status comes closer examination of the piece and the artist behind it. Further investigation reveals a candidate that may not be the best candidate for artists based on his choice in Shepard Fairey.
A few searches for Shepard Fairey quickly reveals the controversy over his work and the fact that the artist has been caught plagiarizing and violating international copyright laws several times. While Fairey’s work can be questioned there is a deeper question that remains: Does Barack Obama acknowledge international copyright laws and would he be for or against the Orphan Works bill being passed? Based on his actions one can conclude that Obama does not acknowledge the rights of visual artists.
If actions are the marking of a candidate than it could very well be that he does support the controversial bill that has had opposition from over 60 art organizations and high profile artists like Frank Stella representing the Artists Rights Society. In an election race where actions by the candidates are investigated deeply I find it odd that very few sources have made this connection and the possibility that Obama might be the wrong candidate for the creative community that opposes the Orphan Works bill and copyright violations. If he supports the art of Shepard Fairey I don't think he can be against the Orphan Works bill at the same time.
I contacted the Obama campaign and McCain campaign about the candidates position on the bill. I've yet to receive an answer from either camp. Actions do speak louder than words. So in that since both candidates have failed the creative community. The problem with Obama is that he has openly supported a known copyright violator. This is a situation that places many artists in conflict. On one side they support the hope that Obama offers and on the other side they do not support individuals who fail to acknowledge international copyright law.
The creative community has strongly supported the Obama campaign. At some point Obama deserves to give them an answer to these questions. Until that time we can only hope that he does.

Hi. You can pass it on if you want. I had some trouble posting it and I don't know if I had it set for public domain or not.

There are a lot, too many questions about Obama, people need to do more research into his intentions and beliefs before voting in November...I believe they will find there is enough reasonable doubt to change your vote to someone else who can lead our country in the best direction.! Below are a few things I have found which lead me to question his intentions and judgement.

What comes first - your personal needs or wants? Or your support of the health and well being of your society on a larger scale: i.e. civic responsibility?
There are no perfect candidates. You may prefer one who seems to be a feisty go getter who's not afraid of challenges and happens to be the same race or gender as you - but unfortunately has no foreign policy experience and thus could put our national security at risk, do you still vote for this person just because you "like" him or her? Or do you vote according to what you feel is best for the nation?
In my perfect world, we would have a candidate that supported the rights of artists just as feverishly as they defend the rights of the poor or alternative energy policy. They would be a genius at foreign relations and economics, have a squeaky clean background and a real interest in ending the practice of lobbying in washington. Education would be a top priority and they would have a clear and realistic path to creating universal healthcare. Since the person doesn't exist, I am forced to make a choice based on either my very personal vested interests, or what I think over all will be a best choice for the countries future. Given the evidence of the last 8 years, I'd have to say my clear choice for a chance at America being a on a better path is Obama. I am emphatically opposed to the Orphan Works fiasco that was fast tracked through the Senate, all we can do is keep calling our Congressional reps to let them know how strongly we oppose it. But I am slo aware that America is facing dire threats that are far greater than this Bill, so when you vote in November, please keep that reality in mind.

Im sorry, but I feed my family by my artworks and endeavors. There is NO greater cause than my ability to do that. Obama has no plan, save the watchwords of tyranny; hope and change.

I wish the McCain campaign would hit on the fact that the artist behind the Obama HOPE poster, Shepard Fairey, is a known radical who has made a career on works depicting the burning of the White House and other extreme images of social violence. His past works provoke violent actions and exploit the concept of class warfare to the point of being a calling card promoting violence in the streets.Thank you so much for exposing this!
Obama claims to support the arts while walking hand in hand with Shepard Fairey who is a career copyright violator and supporter of the orphan works bill. I don't understand why so many people are ok with that. Why would any artists support Obama? I know he has made statements supporting art education and art programs. But what about the rights of artists Mr. Obama? Actions sometimes speak louder than words and Obama hand selected Shepard Fairey so what does that say about his position on artist rights?
I like street art but I don't think it is wise for a candidate for President to support it openly. Obama actually praised Shepard in a letter for his career and for 'bombing' images of Obama on illegal places like stop signs. How can a candidate support risky activity like that which could result in an accident? The clean up of graffiti and other street art does cost tax payers billions per year. And Obama supports that? Talk about wasteful spending that could be used to support art education and art programs! Obama has already failed the art community with his actions while supporting it with his words. It just does not add up.
I know that McCain's campaign has upset artists for using their songs without permission but there is a difference because they bought the rights to use those songs. At least McCain's campaign was nice enough to stop using them even though they paid. And the difference is that McCain did not select those songs his campaign did. Obama hand selected Shepard Fairey to represent him as an official campaign artist. Obama has accepted $400,000 from this copyright violator and criminal but he donated Rezko's donations to charity? McCain has fought for copyright protection and patent protection. So he has my vote.
I make part of my living selling prints. So I will not vote for Obama because he threatens my career. The media should expose this and McCain should target it!

SF is a lies. I go to the Obey site often and he mentioned being in Miami. I can tell you that he was not. I was there. His gallery even said he was not in town. The image of him standing by the artwork was made BEFORE it was shipped to Scope. If you look at the floor you will notice it is not the same flooring that Scope had in Miami. I have no doubt that his crew was in Miami. But SF was not. Period.
