NP Rank:
Costa Rica Tops List of 'Happiest' Nations
Happiness - The one thing that everyone living desires. It is the one thing that everyone living is striving for every moment of their lives. However, every desirable thing does not come easy and sometimes does not even come to everyone. Happiness has become a rare commodity.
Drawing up a list of happiest nations seems to be bit over the top to me. As this no way gives an idea how happy people are actually. This result might be drawn up after a long survey of sorts but one cannot generalize such things. However, all said and done Costa Rica has been named as the happiest nation.
Forget Disneyland! Costa Rica is the happiest place in the world, according to an independent research group in Britain with the goal of building a new economy, "centered on people and the environment."
Costa Rica is known for its lush rain forests and pristine beaches.
In a report released Saturday, the group ranks nations using the "Happy Planet Index," which seeks countries with the most content people.
In addition to happiness, the index by the New Economics Foundation considers the ecological footprint and life expectancy of countries.
"Costa Ricans report the highest life satisfaction in the world and have the second-highest average life expectancy of the new world (second to Canada)," the organization said in a statement.
They "also have an ecological footprint that means that the country only narrowly fails to achieve the goal of ... consuming its fair share of the Earth's natural resources."
The Central American country, tucked between Nicaragua and Panama, touts its lush rain forests and pristine beaches. Its president, Oscar Arias Sanchez, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for trying to help end civil wars in several Central American countries.
This year's survey, which looked at 143 countries, featured Latin American nations in nine of the Top 10 spots.
The runner-up was the Dominican Republic, followed by Jamaica, Guatemala and Vietnam.
Most developed nations lagged in the study.
While Britain ranked 74th, the United States snagged the 114th spot, because of its hefty consumption and massive ecological footprint.
The United States was greener and happier 20 years ago than it is today, the report said.
Other populous nations, such as China and India, had a lower index brought on by their vigorous pursuit of growth-based models, the survey suggested.
"As the world faces the triple crunch of deep financial crisis, accelerating climate change and the looming peak in oil production, we desperately need a new compass to guide us," said Nic Marks, founder of the foundation's center for well-being.
Marks urged nations to make a collective global change before "our high-consuming lifestyles plunge us into the chaos of irreversible climate change."
The report, which was first conducted in 2006, covers 99 percent of the world population, the statement said.

who would have thought it? Guess I'm living in the wrong country!

Funny how the most backward, regressive countries in the world always top these kinds of polls. I'd say the most important criteria (certainly the most transparent) would be: which countries have the greatest waitest list for immigration. Duh.

lol. I seriously doubt Costa Rica is the most "backward, regressive country". At least we're not bombing and/or robbing other countries of their natural resources to boost our own agendas. And just fyi, CR is a haven for many refugees from Central America and Colombia fleeing war and drug-related conflicts.
The refugee situation is not a matter of laugh.

This is interesting and is not surprising. It appears that the countries with the most advances are the ones that are the least happy.

Well, that's new to me. I mean, nobody asked me if I'm happy. But I guess we ticos are happy. Funny thing is right now we're battling our dear president against his environmental-damaging decisions, unemployment increases with each day, just recently a newspaper published how we're now having to decide whether to pay the bills or EAT.
I think the reason we topped the list is because we have a generalized superiority complex. The fact that we have no army and coups have been long erased from our history makes us oh-so-proud of ourselves. So, probably, when asked, as a nation, how proud or happy we are, we're most likely to refer ourselves as the happiest, proudiest and humblest. However we, like any other nation, are drowning in gang-related violence, robberies and assassinations every day. We constantly denounce the government's corruption and embezzlement of funds. Believe me, kids, we are no better than any of your countries.
The other funny thing is, Guatemala rates really high on the list. It should have been the other way round. These people are really suffering from maras killing, extreme poverty and corrupt politicians.
But, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, some say.
