The Cove Won Best Documentary at the 2010 Oscars. Star Ric O'Barry Held Up a Sign During the Acceptance Speech. What Did the Sign Say?

The Cove won the 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary. The Cove acceptance speech was one of the more memorable moments of the Academy Award broadcast. Ric O'Barry, the subject of the documentary, held up a sign but many viewers missed it because cameras quickly cut away.

What Did The Cove Sign Say?

Richard O'Barry's sign read, "Text Dolphin to 44144."

So what happens when you text 44144? According to TakePart.com, texting 44144 will sign you up to receive information about the fight to end the slaughter in Taiji.

The Cove depicted O'Barry's quest to end the killing of dolphins in Taiji. Both O'Barry and producers faced tremendous risks while filming the Cove. O'Barry captured and trained the first five dolphins who played Flipper in the popular 1960s TV series of the same name. O'Barry later regretted his work on the TV show and has dedicated his life to protecting dolphins.

Lets not forget about how O'Barry admits that he abused those dolphins and eventually killed 2 of those dolphins resulting in him being fined...yea let's forget what he did and give him an award. I will never support that man.

So you never have to change anything in your life because you are born perfect? Ric is my hero and deserved to win! What a victory for the dolphins! I do hope this is the beginning of the end of the exploitation of these wonderful animals.

It is a victory for world wide spread of knowledge of these slaughters.  Those fishermen not only kill Dolphins(smaller whale), they kill Pilot Whales, Hump Back Whales, Orca(Killer) Whales, etc.. If you liked the message from The Cove, I would highly suggest viewing the show on Discovery Channel called Whale Wars.

Tre Friday....perhaps one of the most ignorant comments I've read on the net to date.

So you never have to change anything in your life because you are born perfect? Richard O'Balley is a true hero. He changed! We are always changing because we are always LEARNING! Think better before put on words an absurd like that.

I'm so pleased that The Cove got an award.........it is sickining that countries are allowed to do such terrible things. The most important thing is that people were forced to watch what is happening to the dolphins, it came on so fast, I don't think anyone knew what they were watching until it was over.........good now lets keep it going and stop Japan........how awful to watch!

Everyone deserves a chance for redemption. Congratulations to the makers of a remarkable film.

It seems that Ric O'Barry will never forget what he did either. Probably the reason he dedicates his life to saving captive dolphins.

past is past what counts is the future and what Rick does for dolphins now... he didn't kill dolphins, they died due to capture and extensive stress as many other dolphins die in every single aquarium - Rick is a great man - Directors Guild Of America stands behind him!!

OP spare me.  Are you typing this while chomping on a burger? Ric O'Barry has been trashed for more than a  few years in small ways through lines like yours in different areas of press  and I never payed much attention since I've never really thought about dolpins. I saw The Cove and it all fell into place.  Legit people gave him a real voice and come to find out the crazy extremist wasn't crazy at all. I saw him recently whip Jack Hanna's  along with the Seaworld Rep quite successfuly on Larry King.  They struck first with stupid comments like above and couldn't handle basic logic thrown back at them. Makes you realize there really is something up with those organizations that they can't see them selves from the outside in.

So check out the author above of the comment bashing Ric O'Barry.  Did she/he see the movie?  Talk about missing the point.  That's some mentality ... or lack there of.  Likely a spokesperson for SeaWorld.

Any of you who speak ill of o'barry must not have watched "the cove" because if you did you would have seen the demons that man faces. He will spend the rest of his life trying to make amends for the wrongs that haunt him. When it's all said and done he will still carry that weight. We have all made mistakes in our life. At least he's man enough to admit his and make a change for the better. As for this movie, i watched it with my 6 yr old daughter and it had a huge impact on both of us. This was one of the greatest documentaries i have seen in a long time and its one that me or my daughter wont be forgetting. The film and everyone who was involved deserved to be reconized.  CONGRATS TO THEM!!!!

Unfortunately, it is a pity that Kirk and Mandy are seasonal workers for the Vancouver Aquarium and keep perfoming there contradicting the values of the film "The Cove". This is a disgrace that is like a stain for the good will of Ric and what the film stands for. How can you work there when two dolphins are linked to the Japanese dolphin drive?  The film is a plea against having dolphins in aquariums, so why keep promoting the aquarium industry? Obviously it is for profit.  Kirk and Mandy offer to be speakers about the film when it is show for awareness and education and they charge for that, which its completely unethical and inmoral. If you don't believe me, just Google and check Mandy and Kirk at the Vancouver Aquarium news. Mandy was there this year on the 23-24th of January! they have been working there for years! Congratulations to Ric and his crew of real animal activists who happen to be real friends of the dolphins and whales. At least they don't make profit out of Ric's humane cause like these free divers.

I'm so happy that The Cove won for Best Documentary. I thought that was cold that the cameras broke away from Ric O'Barry as he was trying to hold that banner up. I was so curious as to what the banner had on it. I am happy to find it's message here in this article.I'm sure that the incidents where Ric had abused dolphins, had killed two of them when he was on the crew for "Flipper" has made quite an impact on him for the rest of his life, and for the better. Rectifying what he had done is the key to his redemption. To Tre Friday, I hope that you have never done something you had ever personally regretting in your life as to where no one will ever let you forget it. If you have, I hope that others would be able to forgive you. I hope that you would be able to forgive yourself if you had.
