Still said to be the most visited of Berlin's satellite art fairs, the 7th edition of the Berliner Kunstsalon (from 5-10 October 2010) presents mainly small artist-run galleries, art spaces and self-representing artists.

Its new management and new location at the a-station in the former meatpacking district of Friedrichshain (Landsberger Allee 104) allowed for a fresh appreciation of its unique concept. While the level of quality is still somewhat uneven, and may be unavoidable, this year's Berliner Kunstsalon did offer some real highlights.

The large scale flower scans by Berlin artist Neopus are exquisite works that bring to mind the Dutch Vanitas painting tradition. The former director of the fair, artist Edmund Piper, presented his Circus Minimus, a mini art fair structure that could be filled by the fair's participants with a mini version of their art presentations. A special program of daily performances curated by Brazilian dancer/choreographer Marcela Donato was offered in and around La Crèche, a favela like art village made out of recycled materials. Inside La Crèche, adventurously curated presentations of art by international artists like fiber artist Johanna Schweizer, photographer Yael Kaplan, painter Amit Elan or transsexual photographer J.Jackie Baier could be witnessed.

All in all, this smaller edition of the Berliner Kunstsalon made it easier to filter out the more interesting participants without having the feeling of having missed half of the exhibits.
