It was the most fruitful session for the visitors in terms of runs after they resumed from their overnight score of 199 for five with Joe Root unbeaten on 65 and Graeme Swann batting on 19.
Matt Prior, unbeaten on 34 overnight, extended the partnership to 103, the biggest of the innings and it looked as if the pair would take the team safely through to lunch before the wicketkeeper-batsman fell to R Ashwin (1-46).
Bowling round the wicket, Ashwin managed to get the ball to drift away in the air that forced Prior to play down the wrong line with the ball crashing into the stumps after going past the outside edge.
Skipper MS Dhoni surprised everyone by replacing Ashwin with Ishant Sharma (3-47) in the next over and India were immediately rewarded as the pacer got one to reverse swing into Tim Bresnan (0) and caught him plumb in front.
India looked in control of the Test then but Root hung on gamely and found some good support from Swann, who was aggressive in his 41-ball innings, hitting four boundaries.
Root was also growing in confidence and looked to take the attack to the opposition as England edged towards a competitive total.
