With wicketkeeper Matthew Wade absent through injury, Australia had just 12 to select from this morning and confirmed that all-rounder Glenn Maxwell would be the man to miss out, with Steven Smith batting at five and Brad Haddin returning for a first Test outing since January 2012.

That was to be the only news of note to emerge from the opening day as overnight showers were followed by further bouts of precipitation.

India are already 2-0 up in the four-Test series and will regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy should they avoid defeat this week.
