Crystal Bowersox's American Idol Performance After Hospitalization Makes Her A Front-runner

Bowersox spent Tuesday night in the hospital, and although the reason why is still unclear, there are reports that she suffers from diabetes.

But Bowersox's return to American Idol gave Season 9 a needed spark. The drama revolving around her return only amplified her wonderful performance of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Long as I Can See the Light".

Showing no signs of illness, she took it to church, coming off like an indie-rock Janis Joplin over a Hammond organ and her gently strummed acoustic guitar. Whatever was ailing her didn't show onstage, as Bowersox powerfully nailed the vocals, looking confident and strong.

Bowersox's performance garnered praise from Idol's toughest critic Simon Cowell, who said compared the young singer to previous Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, and said he was impressed that Bowersox didn't use her illness as a crutch.

New judge Ellen Degeneres said Bowersox had a "pure, raw, natural talent".
