Dakota Fanning to Star in New, Darker Version of Wizard of Oz
Warner Bros. is planning to film a new version of L. Frank Baum's story Warner Bros. is planning to film a new version of L. Frank Baum's story The Wizard of Oz with 15-year-old Dakota Fanning in the lead role.
McFarlane established himself as a Wizard of Oz revisionist in 2003 when he designed distorted action figures with Dorothy clad in a Victorian bondage costume (click for photo). The action figures came with a story card on the back, radically changing the classic in a story called The Twisted Land of Oz.
McFarlane is continuing his noir vision for the 1939 classic in a sequel that promises to be `darker and more action-packed` than the original film. The protagonist will be Dorothy`s spunkier granddaughter and the movie will be set in present day. Filming will begin in about a year.
"You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place," explains co-producer Todd McFarlane. "But she's much closer to the Ripley character from Alien, than a helpless singing girl."

I never thought the original Dorothy was just a 'helpless singing girl' - granted she was a bit clueless, but she stepped up when she had to and she survived a lot considering all that happened to her.
