Religion has long been a roadblock to progress for women. Other then some religions that worshiped a Mother godessess deity, religion has always opposed equality of women in society. A little known fact today is that the biggest opponents of the right of women to vote, were the religious right-wing of their time. Cady Stanton, the leader of the Suffrage movement, was no lover of religion. She said, "The greatest block today in the way of woman's emancipation is the church, the canon law, the Bible and the priesthood."

Well, a group of Mormon women created a facebook page in order to get women to wear pants to church. Of course, a century ago it was still controversial for women to wear pants in larger society. Well, they got death threats for their efforts, even though there is no Mormon prohibition on the wearing of pants. But some men are so extreme in their religious fanaticism that they issue death threats to women who call for the wearing of pants by other women. Amazing, but I can't say I am that surprised.

Well, the Mormon Church is known for its' opposition to basic gay rights and equality and opposition to progress. In Egypt there is voting on a new Constitution which would give Islamic clerics the final say on judging law. The Christian right-wing is worried about this and so am I.

Ironically, they argue that this is why free elections are bad in nations like Egypt and Iraq because it leads to quasi religious governments while ignoring the effects of Christianity in the United States. Gay men up to less than a decade ago were banned from consensual sex with other gay men, because of religion, in a number of states.
