Deep-fried Oreos hit midway

I have a friend who goes to the Calgary Stampede midway one day each year to eat all the midway food she can handle. It's a deep-fried experience. Calgary food critic John Gilchrist summarizes this year's midway delicacies, which include deep-fried Oreos, deep-fried Twinkies, deep-fried coke and deep-fried dough.   . Then of course there are the pizzas-on-a-stick, tacos in a bag, hot beef sundaes.......

Deep-fried Oreos.
Just a couple of words, but what images they evoke. Vanilla-cream-filled, chocolate wafer cookies, thickly battered and dunked into hot oil.

Oh, yeah -- it's time for Stampede.
This year, the Stampede is herding us in many culinary directions. The carnies, hot off the American State Fair trail, have brought a whole new menu of deep-fried delights north of the border. (The State Fair of Texas has a deep-frying competition each year, many winners of which slide onto the Stampede Grounds shortly thereafter.) So this summer, we'll see deep-fried Oreos, along with other cholesterol-spiking newcomers to the grounds: Deep-fried Twinkies, Pizza on a Stick, Beignets and Bacon on a Bun. And, if you're wondering, returning this year will be last year's oily faves: Deep-fried Coke, Taco in a Bag, the Hot Beef Sundae and the succinctly named Fried Dough -- I'm sure there'll be little donuts everywhere too.

Yuck, the combination of cream and grease doesn't sound too appealing.

ppeggy, I like this story. It's good stuff. Our equivalent here in the uk is the deep fried Mars Bar - especially in Glasgow - it's a caramel toffee chocolate bar - great - but not deep fried in batter - a real heart attack snack!
