How does a true crime author win the coveted “Defender of the Innocents” award?  Diane Fanning recently accepted this award, presented by the Innocence Project, and the woman whom she aided in being released from prison, wrongfully convicted of murdering her own son.  The case of Julie Rea, and the death of her son, Joel, was recounted in Fanning’s book, “Through the Window” and is being presented by the popular show on Investigation Discovery, “On the Case with Paula Zahn.”

Paula Zahn is a 30 year veteran journalist and news correspondent and host of “On the Case with Paula Zahn,” entering into its fourth season, and continues ID’s commitment to bring viewers to the forefront of the pursuit of truth and justice.

Truth and justice is something that Julie Rea wondered if she would ever see after she was convicted of the murder and sentenced to prison, until an unlikely person inadvertently entered her life and changed it forever.

“A Mother’s Nightmare” airs on Sunday, June 19th 10/9c

10-year old Joel Kirkpatrick is murdered in his own bed in the middle of the night. Police believe his mother Julie is a likely suspect after hearing her tell a story about a mysterious intruder, who vanishes in the night. Then an author writing a book appears to have uncovered an important link to solving the case. For nearly a decade, there will be painful accusations, a confession and lingering doubts about whether justice will ever be served.

Diane Fanning is one of the “elite” authors in the true crime genre.  She is also the author of a series of novels featuring the character of Lt. Lucinda Pierce.  The fourth book in the series, TWISTED REASON, is launching July 1, 2011.  For more information about Diane Fanning and to purchase her books, please visit her website:   www.dianefanning.com
