Documentation of Spontaneous Reactions to Rabin’s Murder

Hayim Shtayer went in November 1995 to Kikar Malchei Yisrael (Israeli Kings Square) in Tel Aviv, the place where the Israeli prime minister and defense minister Yitzhak Rabin was murdered by Yigal Amir on the 4th of November 1995, and documented the spontaneous reactions of the Israeli public as they were written and painted on the walls there.

            This is the first time this collection is published.

The picture above [Copyright: Hayim Shtayer 2008] shows Rabin’s portrait along with the caption: “Yitzhak Rabin of Blessed Memory 1922-1995” and with President Clinton’s unforgettable words of mourning: “Shalom Chaver” (Fair well Friend).

Hayim Shtayer is an independent designer. He lives in Haifa, Israel. He lectures at the Department for Graphic Design in the Wizo Design Academy in Haifa, in the West Galilee College, and in the Museology Department at Haifa University. He is responsible for the publishing of Beit Ha-Tfutzot (The Diaspora Museum) since it’s founding in 1978. He won numerous prizes for his graphic works in Israel and abroad. Besides he owns a collection of postcards posters and Happy New Year cards, which includes thousands of items.
