15 dolphins have been trapped  in the narrow Shrewsbury River for about 2.5 weeks, possibly after making a wrong turn chasing schools of bait fish. Wildlife authorities are concerned that heavy boat traffic on the river - which will be even heavier over the July 4 weekend - could endanger the dolphins. I hope these dolphins will be just fine.

Despite concerns for their safety, wildlife experts decided this afternoon they will not try to move the pod of bottlenose dolphins that has been playing in the Shrewsbury River for the past week.

State and federal officials spent the day discussing options for the pod of about 15 dolphins, including several young calves, that have been cavorting between Sandy Hook and Rumson. Officials had hoped extreme thunderstorms over the weekend would have pushed them out to sea, but the dolphins stayed in the river, where they appear content, said Terry Frady, spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Dolphins dance their way down NJ river

People just can't get enough of these dolphins that have become regulars here, but the longer they stay, the more endangered they become. A dozen dolphins, including three calves, have been dancing their way up and down this river along the Jersey shore, attracting thousands of fans.

For three weeks the pod has been trapped between two rivers after taking a wrong turn from the Atlantic, but every time they reach the bridge - just moments from the ocean and freedom - they turn around and head back down the river, remaining trapped.

This is sad when they reach the bridge the workers are setting off vibration that are scaring the dolphins away.  I hope they'll be ok, we had the same thing happen here in Virginia Beach,VA a few years ago.  There are going to be tons of boats on the water in a couple of days.  I only hope the boaters repsect the dolphins.

Apparently the dolphins have moved further inland: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/sns-ap-wayward-dolphins,0,7267004.story. We are just glad that they still seem to be in good health. Here is the blog post we (National Aquarium in Baltimore) wrote on the issue: http://nationalaquarium.wordpress.com/2008/07/02/dolphins-dolphins-everywhere/
