When the Edinburgh International Festival was founded in 1947, the aim of the festival was echoed in the words of the programme: ‘To all the visitors, whoever they may be and from whatever part of the world they may come, Edinburgh will extend a most warm welcome......

In 2012 the Edinburgh International Festival's participation explores the power of the arts to transcend geographical boundaries and differences – uniting people from around the world. Just as the world’s elite athletes gather in London for the Olympics, so the world’s elite performers gather in Edinburgh. See the stars of today alongside the next generation of world-class artists and immerse yourself in a unique celebration of artistic excellence.

Thursday 9 August Festival 2012 opens.

Sunday 2 September Virgin Money Fireworks Concert, and Festival 2012 comes to a close.
