Okay, at a youthful 48, I remember the pitter patter of my own young girl's heart when someone mentioned Davy Jones from the Monkees or Greg Brady from the Brady Bunch. I even remember thinking how great Greg sang (honestly). It was a rather magical time in my life which was one of many important stepping stones to growing up. So, as I watch my daughter have the same pitter patter heart reaction to the Jonas Brothers ... I can't help but smile when she is jonesing for all things Jonas Brothers.
Now if you don't know who the Jonas Brothers are then you must not have a tween or teen in your life. The band is made up of three real life brothers who write music, sing and play instruments. Their big break came when the toured with Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana) and were recently in Disney's Camp Rock. You have probably already guessed intuitively that perhaps one is shy, one is goofy and one is "seriously" good looking. Their music doesn't speak about hurting or degrading anyone - thus it could be much worse considering some of the music I hear booming out of cars on the street.
Anyway, the jonesing for all things Jonas Brothers was a tolerated obsession in our house as was Barney, Pokemon, and Lizzie McGuire ... that was until we needed to help our daughter plan her recovery from a serious surgery. A few months ago she was diagnosed with kyphosis (a condition that causing the back vertebras to wedge and spinal column curve outward). The only treatment was a surgery that would put 2 rods and 26 screws in her back and fuse 6 vertebras with an expected recovery time of 4 to 6 months with no bending, lifting or twisting.
Suddenly, our daughter's jonesing for all thing Jonas Brothers became a real motivator to walk and recover because as luck would have it they were coming to concert in Denver only three weeks after her surgery. The concert discussion was a great topic for the docs and nurses in the hospital too as we had posted a concert countdown in her room. We had pre-surgery purchased four tickets in the wheelchair section and invited two gal pals to join us. We are now a few days plus post surgery and our daughter is walking 5 times a day at least one block each time to build stamina to help her stay awake for the concert.
Okay, at a youthful 48, my music tastes have grown-up and if I have any musical jonesing going on it may be more toward jazz and mellow rock. Bette Midler was the last concert I attended. After that I pretty much swore no more concerts because of experiencing the nose bleed seats we had and the hassle of parking. However, on July 19th at Fiddler's Green, I will be gratefully joining my daughter and thousands of other screaming fans jonesing for all thing Jonas Brothers with a big smile on my face, a happy heart and a very good pair of plugs snuggly fit in my ears!
PS Watch for the post concert article!
