French Architects SERERO have proposed a shocking birthday present for the Eiffel Tower. A redesign! That's right, they want to slap on a 360 degree viewing gallery to the top level of the iconic tower. The addition would only be temporary but it's still bound to stir the ire of the Perisians and traditionalists alike. I say, go for it upset the status quo...just as long as you take it down eventually. I think temporary public art projects like this are terrific as it makes people take note of the things around them. Pictures courtesy of Serero architects. What do you think?

temporary re-design proposal from SERERO Architects for the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel gets approved and actually built? Fearless are the few brave souls willing to face the wrath of the French when and if this design to celebrate the 120th birthday of Gustave Eiffel’s original inspiration gets approved. Aiming to “create a temporary horizontal extension of the third floor of the tower in order to increase the quality of the access of the public as well as experiencing the fantastic 360 degrees sight of Paris.”, the designers project will extend the top floor plate of the tower by grafting a high performance carbon Kevlar structure on it. The structure will be temporarily bolted to the slab without requiring any modification of the existing structure.

Personally, I like the way the tower looks now...It's a part of world history, why commercialize it even more than it already is?

I do not like the design of the viewing gallery as it unbalances the original design. I am all for public art events but some things are untouchable. Why not commission an artist/architect to design a brand new seperate work to view the tower from a distance. Any addition should aim to compliment the tower rather than destroy its proportions.

don't change historical buildings and/or great worldwonders, unless they fall apart. And even then, just restore it, like the way it was ment to be.
