Ellen DeGeneres Responds to Anti-Gay Group on J.C. Penney Dispute
Ellen DeGeneres stands up to "One Million Moms" for their campaign against JC Penney for hiring her as their spokesperson.
When Ellen DeGeneres was hired by the retail store J.C. Penny to be their spokesperson, anti-groups, such as One Million Moms opposed the decision to hire her because of her sexual orientation.
On their Facebook page, an administrator for One Million Moms said:
"Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families, DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there."
Other members are telling people to call J.C. Penney and complain to remain neutral in cultural ways. However, J.C. Penney has stood their ground in support for Ellen.
"A vast majority of Americans today support Ellen as well as their LGBT friends and family members," Herndon Graddick, a GLAAD spokesman said in a written statement. "Selecting an out performer who has inspired and entertained millions, is not only a smart business practice, but a reflection of how LGBT Americans today are an integral and valued part of the fabric of our culture."
On an episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” taped Tuesday and airing Wednesday, the host said, “Normally I try not to pay attention to my haters, but this time I’d like to talk about it ’cause my haters are motivators.”
DeGeneres showed her visitors on the show a statement from One Million Moms' Facebook page, “By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years.”
DeGeneres responded, “Being gay or pro-gay isn’t a bandwagon. You don’t get a free ride anywhere. There’s no music. ... Occasionally we’ll sing ‘We Are Family,’ but that’s about it.”
Even Fox News' Bill O'Reilly is calling One Million Moms' campaign a witch-hunt.
