Elvis Presley was born January 8th 1935 and died August 16th 1977. He was considered a music legend and just as Michael Jackson was called The King of Pop, Elvis will likely always be The King of Rock and Roll.

Many fans are paying tribute to Elvis this weekend, and Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley attended his birthday celebration at Graceland Plaza in Memphis.

Later tonight in Memphis, all Elvis records will be played at the Memphis Marriott and Memphis has events all weekend to honor their most famous resident.

January 8th to January 10th, 2010 – with concerts, live entertainment, autograph signings, Rock-a-Hula Girls Charity Benefit, the Elvis Birthday Pops by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Elvis' 75th Birthday Bash on Beale Street, a Southern Gospel Celebration at Graceland with Elvis' Imperials, and various Elvis Fan Club events.

In Los Angeles there will also be a celebration at the Egyptian for all Elvis fans:

In his absence, Angelenos can gather at the Egyptian for a marathon celebration that includes a quiz game and a double feature of 1957's "Jailhouse Rock" and the documentary "Elvis '56." There also will be karaoke, birthday cake, barbecue and banana-peanut butter pancakes.

Elvis began his career in 1954 and broke on to the music scene with his unique sound and controversial dance moves in 1956. He also appeared in a number of Hollywood movies, but returned to his first love of music in 1968. His live performance via satellite in 1973, called Aloha From Hawaii was, and still is the most watched broadcast of an individual entertainer in television history, watched by over 1.5 billion viewers.

Elvis is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music and he is in four music halls of fame.

He died at the young age of 42 although for years there have been conspriacy theories that he is still alive and that his death was a hoax.

Elvis influenced many singers, and also musicians.  I read somewhere that the Beatles credited him for influencing them along their way to stardom.
