NP Rank:
Ernest Borgnine to Get SAG Lifetime Achievement Award
SAG Awards 2011 to Honor Ernest Borgnine
Ernest Borgnine, 93, has played heroes and villains with equal relish since 1951. Sixty years on, he will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
An Academy Award winner for his role in Marty, Ernest Borgnine has worked as a character actor. Eighties stealth-helicopter fans, of course, know Ernest Borgnine as Dominic in Airwolf, and action fans know him from The Dirty Dozen and The Wild Bunch, but did you know that he also appeared in Spongebob Squarepants?
Ernest Borgnine filmography: more than just Stringfellow Hawk's sidekick.
With more than on-screen 200 appearances over nearly sixty years, Borgnine qualifies as a Hollywood legend, though he's usually considered a "that guy" actor.
In announcing their decision to honor Borgnine, SAG president Ken Howard said, “Whether playing brutish villains, sympathetic everymen, complex leaders or hapless heroes, Ernest Borgnine has brought a boundless energy which, at 93, is still a hallmark of his remarkably busy life and career. It is with that same joyous spirit that we salute his impressive body of work and his steadfast generosity.”
