Norway's Alexander Rybak stole the show at the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday with his winning song ‘Fairytale’ - but what did he have that the others didn’t?

Alexander has a musical background as the son of a pianist and violinist. He has been playing the violin since he was five and has written about 80 songs himself. He also works as a musical performer in Norway. 

Rybak’s performance in the Eurovision Song Contest was refreshingly different. There was no pop, no dancers wearing skimpy outfits, no ridiculous lights and effects.

Elegantly dressed in a suit, the 23-year-old showed the audience that he was there to play his violin and sing the song he had written because he is passionate about it!

The audience loved him for it.

So is he looking forward to all the female attention that he will get now? Alexander told BILD: “I don’t have much time for love at the moment! I sang this song for the woman of my dreams. My first big love, which was five years ago.”

His performance was natural and authentic – the Norwegian hero looks like the boy next door.

He was much more convincing than the Germans and their use of a famous burlesque star, according to Eurovision Song Contest veteran Guildo Horn, who said: “Maybe Dita von Teese was a little bit too plastic!”

Many expected a lot more from the sexy stripper. But even if Dita had given a wilder performance to ‘Miss Kiss Kiss Bang’, the organisers of the event may have considered it to be slightly inappropriate...
