2nd semi final eurovision 2009 slovakia

Some hate and some adore Eurovision song contest. Even it's more about the politics already but the show is worth to be seen. 42 countries from Europe and Asia occupied Russia's capital Moskow for 54th Eurovision song contest.

Last year Dima Bilan impressed peope and second attemp to win the contest was succesfull. Year of preparation and finally on Tuesday first semi final bang the walls of Olympiyski indoor arena. Massive event not only in Moskow and whole Russia but also a spectacle for Europe.

But looks like Eurovision is getting back to it's roots. Simple and simply amazing songs without massive shows. Looks like Bilan not only wone Eurovision but helped the contest to get back to the roots when everything was about the music and not the show. A "Star gate" improvisation by Ukraine was probably the only one to jump higher than anyone else. But still - people do like show.

19 contestants and only 10 tickets to the final. Nine of them been selected by the viewers and one was picked up by the jury. Croatia, Norway, Denmark, Azerbaijan, Greece, Lithuania, Moldova, Albania, Ukraine and Estonia left all others behind. But despite this only few songs catch real attention.

After years of English-spoken songs national languages striked again. And this was really impressive to see. If you are Eurovision fan probably have watched the Junior Eurovision which was simply amazing. And looks like elder decided to get back to the roots also. Urban Symphony from Estonian impressed by the simplicity and even it was great in Estonian I'd love to hear the English version."Fairytale" by Alexander Rybak impressed the most. Violin and rather interesting song and of course - amazing voice. Lithuania finally picked somebody really talented. And it worked out. Sasha Son with his "Love" brought hope for Lithuanians. The third to remember was Brinck from Denmark. "I wanna breaf again, I wanna believe again" - few lines that catched attention. But despite all the lights and show that was made - nothing to remember really more.

But the decision who will go home with heads up or down will be made tomorrow. At 8PM (GMT+0) the final will host the top 25 countries. And according to new rules only half of the points will be made by the audience. The second half will come from juri. And - maybe they will pay more attention to the talents and not the show itself.

Finalists in order:

1. Lithuania
2. Israel
3. France
4. Sweden
5. Croatia
6. Portugal
7. Iceland
8. Greece
9. Armenia
10. Russia

13. Moldova

16. Denmark
17. Germany

I love the Russian Balaliaka in the second video, those cute bears at the end dancing with each other!! I would rather watch that than the  sex filled American music videos.

Those are nice videos Sara, thanks for uploading them. I did like the Russian Balaliaka as well. It would be nice to find a video from each countries contestant to add to this post.

I do not think it is to cheesy, maybe nostalgic or reviving old traditions as the Russian did in the show. And Slovakia made an excellent performance, I think.

Hey Jazzyzazzy,

Thats what makes it so over the top. A throw back to the 1950's on steroids.

Thanks for the report.

I like the songs that are sung in the native tongue.

I though it was actually over all pretty good. I seems that traditional close, music and folklore, mixed with modern and the 60s is making a come back, wish is actually nice to see. It is after all EuroVision and not America-Vision.

Europe going back to its roots is a good trend and fitting.

Now with internet and globalization, Americans are able to appreciate other cultures, instead of just what their TV stations feed them. Besides the "Roman" empire is collapsing.

Hum, Well maybe, however they are still well armed wish is worrying. I do not want to see all those ABC weapons go off at any time.

The most notable winning Eurovision artist whose career was directly launched into the spotlight following their win was ABBA, who won the Contest for Sweden in 1974 with their song "Waterloo". ABBA went on to be one of the most successful bands of their time.

Another notable winner who subsequently achieved international fame and success was Céline Dion, who won the Contest for Switzerland in 1988 with the song "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi". Dion's success, however, is not as directly attributed to her winning the Contest, as she achieved international fame some years later.

Yes, I never understood that one, Celine Dion representing Switzerland, being from Quebec.

Nicole represented Germany at Eurovision Song Contest 1982 where she won with the song, "Ein bißchen Frieden" ("A Little Peace"), with music by Ralph Siegel and lyrics by Bernd Meinunger. When she reprised the song after the end of the contest voting, she performed parts of the song in English, French and Dutch along with the original German. It has been a big show since 1956 and still going strong.

I can't quite get what a stripper is doing in a music competition. Adding flare and publicity I guess. German Von Teese is Marilyn Manson's ex....

Dita Von Teese may not be renowned for her singing voice, but the burlesque stripper will be one of the main attractions at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

She is a dancer and will perform for a song that is actually written about her.

I liked the article and I am watching Eurovision on the internet and listening to parts of it on my shortwave radio.
