Serangan island, a 73-hectare island located just 250 metres off the southeast coast of Bali, is the resident of Sakenan temple–one of the most visited temple for religious purpose on the southern part, according to the legend Sakenan temple was founded in the 10th century by wanderer-priest Mpu Kuturan. Ten days after Galungan Day, Balinese Hindu followers will celebrate the prosperity day of “Kuningan“, marking the elaborate temple festival at Sakenan Temple.

Serangan island also known as turtle island is connected to the mainland by a causeway and only accessible at low tide. During the high tide, this island is isolated from the mainland and can only be reached by boat either from Sanur, Suwung, or Tanjung Benoa.

Aside from being nicknamed Turtle Island, Serangan Island is now celebrated as the center of lobster cultivation. Established two years ago in December 2006, these cultivated lobsters are expected to meet the demands of hotels and restaurants in Bali.

This lobster cultivation project denotes the realization of the Community-Based Economic Development Program organized by Denpasar Municipality. The lobsters cultivated are of the sand and pearl variety. When the lobsters reach the age of 2-3 months they are harvested. Lobster hatchlings are obtained from Negara and Banyuwangi. The Jaba Segara fishermen group is actively cultivating these lobsters.

Serangan also owns a beautiful beach and the good high wave. Many surfers have experienced this place, which makes them enjoy surfing on this spot.

Getting There
Head south from Sanur or Denpasar City (or east from Kuta) to Pesanggaran, then follow signs to Serangan. On a festival day a steady stream of traffic will cross the bridge heading from Sakenan temple.

An alternative route is to pay someone to take you by boat from Tanjung Benoa.
