From funny-captioned cat photos to a bona fide art show, the LOLcat meme is moving from the web to the gallery.

The first-ever LOL Art Show will be held in San Francisco on Thursday, October 23rd.

I Can Has Cheezburger? along with curator Marianne Goldin are organizing a LOL Art Show which takes place this Thursday, October 23rd at Varnish Fine Art in San Francisco. The art show and silent auction is a benefit for Partners in Reading which helps with adult literacy. Advance tickets for the LOL Art Show are now on sale.

This show is comprised of artists from around the world: professionals, students, and lovers of art. There are painters, draughtspeople, comic artists, sculptors, glass artists, media artists, musicians and conceptual artists. All these individuals responded to an open call for a very new kind of art show. Their work creates a visual vocabulary required for the concept of LOLcat art to exist.

I love LolCats, and this seems like a good idea, but I am not sure how many people would attend given the number of images available online.

This photo, generously provided by some benevolent donor to the Icanhascheezburger site was captioned by myself under the name peregrin. It was built using their lolbuilder, and submitted. Much to my surprise, it made the home page, and has been a popular favorite. Por kitteh iz stuk in da pet dor cuz his owner dint no hao ta uze a drill an a skrewdrivr!!!1!!

Congratulations to so many brilliant and humorous LOLZers! ICHC is a great site, and I think the creative works there do qualify as modern art. It says something that the SFO art show is sold out.
